I want to start tuning my 99 GSX. I have a pretty good amount of mechanical experience but not too many indepth tuning knowledge. I got most basic mods. intake, exhaust, etc. I also got a boost, EGT and A/F guage. I plan on getting a datalogger, apexi S-AFC II and a boost controller. the question i have is where do i start, how hard it is to tune it? my engine is still stock with te exception of bolt on parts. I got a GM MAF sensor and a MAF translator but i still have my stock MAF because when i plug in the GM sensor my engine boggs down when slowing down or coming to a stop. at idle it is fine. has anyone bought this datalogger on ebay. is it worth it

thanks

First off gauges are always a good start, and judging by what you said yor basic mods are you are on the right track. You will run into a wall when it comes to raising the boost on the stock T-2small turbo. The best place to start would be is with one of the coolest things that DSMTuners has to offer. The Tuning Guide.... Live by it, and it wont steer you wrong

http://www.dsmtuners.com/tuning-guide/2gturbo/ :thumb:

oaky so according to the tuning gude. i got almost everything done. lighten flywheel, intercooler piping, intake, full 3' thermal exhaust, GM MAF, MAF translator, EGT,BOOST,A/F Guages, CLutch, short shifter, LSD, etc... but i do not have a bigger turbo, FMIC, injectors, fuel pump, ecu upgrade, Exhaust manifold.

the question i have is would it be worth it to get a Apexi S-AFC when i already have a MAF tranlator? I just ordered a boost controller and datalogger and i want to start tuning it with just my stock turbo, fuel pump, injectors.

alright I just installed a Hahn Racecraft super 16G turbo Kit and i am ready to tune it. I have the following to tune with,

GM MAF
MAFT
A/F guage (narrow band)
Boost Guage
S-AFC
PalmnStein Pocket logger

Once again I am new to tuning so here are a few question i have

1. do i need to unplug my S-AFC so i properly tune with the MAFT first? I am currently runing stock boost, and a stock fuel system (I know i will upgrade soon) Can i vent my BOV if i use the MAFT? the MAFT is mounted near the throttle body elbow.

2. what is a good starting point for the MAFT. where do i set the dials?

3. How do i read the Pocket logger, read the information and apply it to the S-AFC?

4. How do i properly use the AFC?

I am currently staioned overseas in germany so i will be logging my runs on the Autobahn. I can't find an AWD dyno.

Here are my engine proformance mods so far

Injen Intake
Full 3' Thermal Exhaust
Blitz BOV
Hahn Racecraft Super 16g turbo
Hi-Flo Catalyic converter

Thanks again and i appreciate all the help

My head hurts from reading this thread:) , $300 is a huge venting price tag. As for tuning, zero out your safc and maft because you have them stock injectors, if the logger indicates adjustments are needed, hunt down the problems and fix them instead of covering it up with the safc. MAFT and SAFC really are not needed until you upgrade to larger injectors, money should have been spent on fuel pump and afpr instead.

If it was mine I would set up everything to 0 on the maft and use the safc to tune with.

The first thing you will want to do is read through this guide. It will help give you some pointers
http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=58403

Before you try to tune for wot runs try to get your fuel trims as close to 100% as you can. Once you get that done drive it for a few days and check to make sure they are staying where you want them.

Your first question. No you dont have to unhook the safc.

Good luck and get you some fuel mods done.:thumb:

yeah i know i need to get some fuel upgrades. but in the mean time i want to tune my car because it is my daily driven car. so far this is what i got from the responses now correct me if i am wrong. once again i am a "newbie" in tuning.

1. Set all dials on the MAFT to 0.----will this affect anything? right now i did a recirculation mod but i want to vent into the atmosphere, or is it better to leave the mod?

2. set the AFC to 0 since i still got my stock fuel system.

3. log my run.

4. make changes where needed to get close to a 100% fuel trim. right? what exactly is a fuel trim? how would i know if i am close?

I downloaded the dsm_tuning_sheet_v2.1 and also printed out the AFC tuning guide?

Thanks again. I really appreciate your help.

How do i read and translate my datalogger? I have a PalmnStein pocketlogger. how do i read it and what do i do with the information. I have read alot threads on datalogger, and tuning but still have a hard time understanding it. here is what i have done

I set all my dials on my MAFT to 0.

on my S-AFC. these are the adjustments

sensor karman
cyl- 4 arrow pointing up
th-point -30%low 80%high
NePoint -1k,2k,3k,4k,4.5k,5k,6k,7k
Lo-throttle - 1,000 rpm: -4%
2,000 rpm: -4%
3,000-7,000rpm +-0%

I have not gotten to the hi throttle yet.

while running it idle LTFT 12 / STFT 24

I still have my stock fuel system, injectors and everything.

Idle sound rough and idles kind up and down between 675-995 rpms

i want to post my log but i do not know how to bring it back and read it

If I were you, I would sell the MAF and Translater and go back to a 2g MAS. I think it would better suite your needs. Use the money you get for selling the blow-thru setup to get a Fuel Pump and an AFPR (aeromotive) first. From here, it should make it easy for you to tune the the SAFC and Logger combo. As for your BOV, I strongly believe in recirculating under all circumstances.

After you get your pump and AFPR set the base fuel pressure to 43.5psi, set the boost to 14psi or so and get a 3rd gear log of whats going on. Post the log up on here, and we can help you tune it

one more thing, don't use that star wars AF gauge to tune with, they are not very accurate.

Also, Make sure you have a MBC to control boost. (Joe P or Hallman are fine)

alright. came across a new problem i notice that i am no building any boost. the BOV still releases when i rev the engine but there is no boost. I checked all the vacuum lines and they all seem to be fine. is it because it is a new and bigger turbo. also it idles funny. and codes pop up the indicate "cylinder misfire" here is what i logged today. check out my logg and give me some ideas

thanks

I just got off the phone with Aaron from Hahn Racecraft and i told him my problem with not building boost. he told me to unhook the BCS wastegate actuator and plug the lines because this is not needed since the Super 16g turbo comes with an adjustable internal wastegate. now is this right? i thought that the BCS is needed since i do not have an aftermarket boost controller. thanks

any one have any ideas? thanks

well I bought some 560cc EVO 8 injectors now i am just waiting for them to come in the mail. I know i still have to upgrade my fuel pump and FPR but should i upgrade my fuel rail or is my stock one enough. will an aeromotive AFPR bolt on to my stock rail? is an adapter needed?

Okay, So my car is idling kind of low. I checked for boost leaks and did not find any. I am running around 15psi of boost on stock injectors but i have a set of Evo VIII 550cc injectors. I do not have a AFPR yet. Is it okay to install them for now? will this help correct my idle? well please let me know ASAP. I do have a Pocket logger and posted my logs but I have not gotten any useful advice. right now my MAFT is all at zero and my AFC is +/- 0 all the way across. and my throttle settings are 30-80. please read my log and give me any adive. I will greatly appreciate it! thanks again

Ok i got my idling problem fixed. and also fixed a boost leak around the BOV flange. here are my recent logs. once again I would really appreciate any help on this.

I second that!

I know but I need advice. can someone please help me out? anybody? at least tell me how to read the log. what to look for? and where to start.

You need a fuel pump,I don't know allot about tuning myself so i won't try to act like i do but you can probably get some useful info on the tuning forum. Like you know you can't post but you can still read and compare. I can see your pulling tons of timing in high gear, probably lack of fuel. Your egt temps must be real high as well. Careful and good luck;) :dsm:

As for your APR question you only need it if you get a 225 fuel pump, A 190 rewired will most likely be efficient for your needs. If i were you i'd get a 190.

As for tuning once you get the injectors in and the fuel pump it will be a whole new story. Theres not tuning to be done with stock injectors.

If you are still having trouble you could always get a chip from dsmchips.com (kind of a waste on only 550 injectors imo). DSMlink would be your best choice. With just 550's youll be fine with the SAFC and logger setup.

Good luck!

thanks. i read that article and even printed it out. but how do i translate the data readings into my adjustments. i.e o2v and timing? I got my 550 injectors and waiting for my Aeromotive FPR and Walbro 255 pump to arrive along with my AEM fuel rail. till then i just want to get the car running right and make sure nothing happens. I am currently stationed in Germany so parts are very slow to get here.
