Resolved New rotors rub caliper bracket

Hi all

My problem: Picked up some drilled/slotted rotors for the GSX and got them on. The drivers side caliper bracket, the part that bolts onto the back(knuckle?), it is rubbing the new rotor. We put everything on the same way it came off. Its pretty straight forward. We put washers in between the bracket and mounting surface to push the bracket out so it wouldnt rub. At one point around the circle it is about 1/16in away and the other side is like 1/4in. This is after the washers, before it has scuffed the rotor. I put on a pretty flat surface and tried to rock it to see if it was warped and definitely nothing noticeable. Tomorrow I will put the rotor on a level surface and try to check the parallelism between the rotor surface and the mounting surface. Also, the wheel doesn't wobble either just the rotor

Is there anything that sticks out to someone as to why this is happening?

Double check to make sure that your rotor is sitting all the way down evenly on the hub. I had an issue where the set of rotors I bought centered around the outside of the hub instead of the inside. Due to corrosion/little dings and stuff around the edge, they wouldnt sit all the way flat. I took a dremel with a stone and carefully ground the edge smooth (basically just took off the rusty surface) and they went on fine after that. Just something to check.
 
I've heard of some one having this problem before. the inside of the hat (were it contacts the hub) was not flat causing it to not run true with the hub, or it can be flat just not parrallel with the front of the rotor hat. Something to take a look at
 
Should there be no gap between the back of the mounting surface of the rotor and the hub surface then? Because I do remember a 1/4 in gap between the two but it seemed even all the way around when I tightened I so I thought it was right. Didn't even check if the others were flush
 
The rotor hat should absolutely sit flush on the hub surface. If it's not, you likely have 99 style hubs that have a small radius between the hub centering ring and the hub surface along with rotors that don't have the corresponding radius. The fix is to get the correct rotors for your hubs.
 
Hmm. I think I do remember seeing the radius. Could I dremel a radius into the back rotor mounting surface without distorting the centering circle on the rotors? This way it still centers correctly but has the room on the radius to sit flush. That or dremel the radius down to a nice corner on the hub.
 
I don't think there's any way you could possible take out the radius in the hub without serious machining because you'd have to reduce it to a 90 degree angle for this to work. Someone might have an idea how but I think it's really unlikely this will be doable.

As for modifying the rotors... that would be the lesser of two evils. I imagine that's going to be really difficult and I wonder how any uneven cutting will affect balance. If you're really in a bind and have to modify parts rather than just buy the right ones, and you're feeling adventurous, this is the only option.
 
Compare your old rotors to your new rotors and see how the inner radius matches up. You could use your old rotor as a guide to marking or "machining" your new rotor inner radius if it isn't big enough.
 
Ok I got it resolved. I had to grind down around the outside of the hub a little bit. I would make a pass and test fit so they fit nicely and now no gap between rotor and hub. I dont know if that was the area you were talking about TsiAWD666. They are on now and my car has never stopped so smoothly or quickly.

You had grind the outer diameter of the hub? That's what I think I see in the last pic there. If so, no that's not at all what I was talking about and very weird that it was needed! Maybe a casting flaw from whatever non-oem manufacturer made your hubs? Weird, but good to know.
 
Yeah I think it was a flaw on the inside of the rotor. there was a minor step where the id of the rotor got smaller. That is what it was catching on. I know what you were talking about and that corner of the rotor was actually chamfered, probably to accommodate the different style hubs like you were talking about.
