New Ride 1990 TSi AWD

I really wanted a 90-91 TSi AWD after having a 91 TSi FWD and boy I got treasure alright.......... I rescued this car on September 3rd 2010 From South Bend Indiana. It had apparently been sitting for quite some time and it shows. The previous owner left a bunch of random papers in there with his number on it so I contacted him about the car. He said he had plans to do a timing belt job, got married, lost interest and let it sit and seven years later I buy it. He switched the front light grey leather seats out for cloth and threw the leather away (if you have front light grey leather seats pm me still need them). It looks as though a FMIC was about to happen but never did. He did the 91+ecu in a 90 and did a hack wire job had a 90 still in the car….. that was fun to fix. It came with the timing belt off. The interior is disgusting, the antenna gasket and antenna are gone and water poured in for 7 years. There was mold EVERYWHERE….Currently the interior is all out but the seats so I can clean it. Did a full timing belt job with all the goodies to go along with it including a balance shaft elimination kit, new pulleys, water pump etc. Front end pretty much got all new parts. Shocks, brake lines, rack and pinion, tie rods, control arms with ball joints, calipers, pads and rotors, driveshaft’s, wheel bearings, strut bearings and the seals that go with all of those. There are new NGK Plugs and wires, fuel filter, radiator, radiator hoses, thermostat and gasket. There are probably things I’m missing that I have replaced/fixed. The car started up fine and idled great. Took it for the first drive and I had accelerating problems and it turned out to be the TPS (throttle position Sensor). I now have a smooth idling/driving DSM the cars build date is April 1990 car has 118,884 miles on it. Pictures are worth 1,000 words. Still have LOTS to do. This car was headed to the junkyard but the dads kid insisted that someone would buy this car and bring it back….that was me

thank you DSMgary. Ive learned tons on this car. Wish I could find light grey leather I would prefer to return this poor car back to its original condition. Kinda sad to see what a car can turn into after 20 years.

Oh no my interior is black now, im looking for a shell, and drivetrain, im going to keep my engine its rebuild and sell my rebuilt tranny later, iim getting link this winter, and then im going to tune the egine. Im looking but not buying yet.

Congrats on bringing a dsm back to life!!

I hope you have lots of money! That car will eat you alive if you don't! I restored one that sat for 6.5 years and I'm still paying for it two years later.

Good job izz......no DSM TSI should ever see the junkyard unless it was driving by to check to see if there were any parts for it! Show those ricers what the word "sleeper" means

Looks like you got a nice project there. Picked up 2 90 AWD TSI's 2 months back. One somewhat similiar to what you've got there. Motor ripped apart, interior completely gutted, but I got about 3 cars worth of parts with it and I've been restoring it slowly since. Other TSI just had an idiot owner who didn't know how to install a fuel pump correctly, so I snagged it off him for a STEAL and got it up and running.

Got a question, what issues were you having with accelerating when your TPS went out?

XLR8 I have thought about the mold being a problem. Ideas on what to use maybe bleach? And lysol on the dash and interior parts?

Tyeler18....my car would idle perfect and start up fine. But as soon as i touched the gas pedal it would bogg. I could get it to 2k and it would go down to 1600 and if i gave more gas it would go to 3k and then back down. I couldnt keep constant rpm past idle.

and $1,100 took a HUGE risk with this car but it turned out that motor transmission and clutch were all good so im very pleased with the car.

Looks good man. I recently rescued my talon from being parted out. I would give u my grey leather front seats but I live in Colorado. I have no use for them.

It looks like you have your work cut out for you. I recently bought a 90 TSi AWD that looks similar except the previous owner had the interior work done then put a tarp over it. It sat for about 3 years but under a cover. It fired up nice but now the real work begins! I look forward to seeing the progress of yours.
