Hey guys I couldn't find a thread that matched what I was looking for exactly so here is the situation, I just had my engine rebuilt and got it started up the other day. It leaks about a half quart of oil every minute. I found it to be the front main seal leaking. So first question is how do I replace that seal with the engine in the car? Secondly, I was holding the throttle to run the engine at 2-3k and then it'll fall on its face then get back up to 2-3k then high then back down and just all choppy sounding/running. And I'll see like a grayish smoke coming out the tailpipe sometimes. Is this due to oil leaking out of the seal and getting on the CPS throwing off the timing? What could the smoke be from? Any help is great, thanks guys.

But to answer your question, I don't think oil on the CPS is your problem.

Mine looked like that from a leaking front main seal and worked just fine.

well my car ran with the everything hooked up but had a leaky valve cover. I have oil on my timing belt now and my car wont start. I have spark and fuel ,the starter spins everything but it wont start now.

I'm currelty redoing all the vaccum line to and around the intake manifold. while the motor was out i switched to a 1g tb and when i first started the car i left them all unhooked and open... it ran fine. is there a way to check the timing using the hamonic ballancer pulley and the dots/ holes on it. and even then the car ran. like it is , then stopped starting.
