HI guys my name is Drew.. i just picked up a 97 talon tsi awd turbo from a used car lot and i'm experiencing a ton of problems... I don't know exactly what the car has in it but the dealer told me it had a first gen talon engine in it rebuilt with 20k... I still have the website i got it from

Now for the problems..

When i'm getting on it around 5500 rpms it will feel as it the turbo just stops spooling and kind of sputters and pops.... I don't know if its too much boost? or what... It smokes from the turbo a little bit sometimes as if the oil seal is shot..

I don't know how much boost i'm running because of that apexi computer ( as seen on the link i posted in the pics ) doesn't work. When the car is off the screen will be blank but when i turn it on its comes on just to show the screen and can't navigate it..

There is also turbo play.. I took a video of it happening but can't post it online but can thru AOL instant messager.. If i move the mass airflow the piece coming from the mass flow to the turbo moves and theres NOTHING on the other side of the mass air flow... just an opening.

Whoever owned this car before me really didn't know how to take care of it and now theres tons of problems i need to fix..

What you've described doesn't sound too bad.

Lots of things can cause pops or sputtering in the upper RPMS. Usually this is caused by an air leak somewhere in the intake system after the mass air flow meter. If you can phyiscally move the airflow meter and the tube connected to it is moving, then it probably isn't clamped down properly.

Well it feels like the car goes from having 300 hp to like 200 when it happens in the high rpm's... I have a huge oil leak and can't tell where its coming from and the car is too low to jack up but i'm going outside to take better pictures. Here is the video for now and i'll send pictures in about 10-15 mins.
 
The dealer told me the guy that traded it in had a big front mount on it and i'm sure other stuff.. He probably took off the good stuff and just never put anything back on.. There is a anti freeze leak because the stock turbo was watercooled and this one isnt and there nothing blocking where the antifreeze can come out.
 
Trans fluid and oil its leaking.. I think the oil is from the turbo... I don't know what size air filter to get that would actually fit.
 
No airfilter (very bad) and the return port for your BOV is open!! That return is after the MAF allowing unmetered air to get to the engine probably cauing the sputtering!

Don't worry about the MAF being loose, it won't hurt anything.
 
just block off the return with a bottle cap for the time being and put a filter on. that would help out a great deal. did you try blocking off where the coolant is leaking? if you wamt to see if your turbo is leaking oil you can disconnect a intake pipe to see if you have oil n it. if you do your turbo is on its way out.
