New build problem

Alright so I finally started my car today after I just rebuilt the motor, stock rebuild. I noticed that I'm leaking coolant onto the 02 housing, and the car is smoking really bad from the exhaust. It almost looks like its leaking out of the o2 housing where is it connects to the turbo, which has a brand new gasket in between and the bolts were torqued down to spec. Any ideas whats going on here?

the only possible explanation is that the coolent is comming form the head into the exaust manifoil to the turbo to the housing. your head might be crack, but i could be wrong.

I dont know how else the o2 housing would get wet, the water pipe is not leaking and thats the only thing close enough to get the o2 housing wet.

the first thing is to determin if it is form the external or internal where the coolent is comming out. form there decide where you need to go.

what about the coolent pipe that run along side the block. the metal pipe, could it be spraying coolent to the housing?

Well. When troubleshooting leaks make sure you start high and towards the front of the car. Gravity will pull the fluid down and wind will pull it to the back of the car. So what's in front of that, that holds coolant?

The radiator.

Check any and all connections at the radiator.

Are you sure it's coolant? when my dipstick blows out it sprays oil all over that area. I'd check that.

The radiator is brand new, and its not leaking anywhere from it. This is what happen after the first start up. Thats all I did was start the car for the first time since it was rebuilt and let it idle for about 10 minutes and this is the problem I found. The whole underside of the manifold is wet to. But it look like the water pipe is fine.

fear for the worse, your head might not be sealing.

I checked both the head and the block for warpage, and they both were well with in spec.

Check that rubber coolant hose that runs by the bottom of your dipstick tube. Could be that. Also, warm the car up (if its not leaking too bad) and shut it off and listen for the leak. Often times you can hear coolant leaks hiss under pressure.

I think I remember seeing this when I had an exhaust manifold stud out on the last engine I put together.

before you tear down the motor take the coolant line's going to the turbo loose route them back to one another turbo could be the problem.If the it's not the turbo it's time to take the head off.

Don't you have a coolant pressure tester? It would go a long way in figuring out where it leaks. I've seen leaks that look like one place. Then I put the tester on and find a tiny stream squirting all the way across the engine bay from somewhere else. It's a lot easier looking for a leak on a cold system, rather than warming up the engine.

If you don't have a pressure tester, see if you can borrow or rent one from your parts store.

I was going to suggest checking the turbo coolant line. Never know if one of those crush washers are wron out or ar not sealing properly. Not to mention the line itself. Another thing that it could possibly be is power steering. I know that this seems unlikely, but best to check for any weird leaks.

when the car is running, can you see where the fluid is coming from? under different RPM's does it seem to leak or sound different in different areas near where the suspected area is?

The turbo could leak coolant and if I remember correctly one of the exhaust studs can leak coolant.

I just bought the turbo from jusmx141, so I sure the turbo is not the problem. All exhaust studs were locktited, so I'm sure there sealing. If I remember correctly its one of the top middle studs that can leak coolant, which There is no visble leak coming from them. The coolant line next to the turbo is not leaking.

I'm leaning towards a freeze plug right now. I'l will be pressure testing the system tonight.

Well I pulled the spark plugs to find them covered in coolant. 2 off them had noticeable coolant on them and the other to just had like a drop on them.

Anyone have any ideas? It has a brand new composite head gasket and both the block and head were checked for warpage and both were well with in spec, and the head is bolted down with ARP headstuds. The car is smoking like a fog machine from the exhaust so its definitly burning coolant.

I checked the turbo for shaft play and there is little to nothing, I also smelt the coolant and dosent seem to smell like gas at all.

Thats what I'm leaning towards, but how would I beable to narrow that down more with out ripping the head off right away.

Leakdown test may help... You'll see air bubbles coming out of your cooling system if you've got a head gasket that's not sealing or a cracked head. You'll be able to find out what cylinder it's on also. Although you said you've got coolant on two spark plugs that's an idication of the head gasket not sealing because it's between cylinders.

Yeah it dosent make any sense why the head gasket would not be sealing, I dont see a reason why it shouldnt be. Beside something being crack. Like said before the block and head were both check for warpage and both were well with in spec, and the fact that I'm using a composite headgasket instead of a MLS. So I should have some leway. I am starting to lean towards something being cracked.

I just dont get what would cause all the spark plugs to have coolant on them. I'v kind of hit a brick wall here and dont know where to go from here. Anyone have any ideas?
