New AWD 91 TSI to the board!

Hey guys, Im not a DSM owner, but my buddy just put a down payment on a 91 Talon TSI AWD, hes gonna pick it up in a week or so.

We looked over it, it was in pretty good shape, except the paint is faded. The motor ran nicely, the owner is a diesel mechanic, they rebuilt the motor with Wiseco 8.5:1 (I think) pistons, and Eagle rods, otherwise it is stock except a boost gauge, running the stock 9 lbs.

Everything looked clean including the rear end, driveshafts, etc.


I want to learn as much about the car as possible, I take it the stock turbo is a 14b, correct?

I drove the car and got on it, it felt ok but needs more power, I know the potential is there. What do they run stock? High 14s/low 15s?

Basically, we will perform all the free mods, and some bolt ons. He wants to do a 3" turbo back mandrel bend with an N1 muffler, some sort of intake with a KN filter, BOV, etc. Is it beneficial to install a FMIC on a bolt on car? I tihnk it would be wise to upgrade the fuel pump, is the Walbro 255 good or should he go with a 190 lph?

Sorry for all the ?'s, I know tons about cars, I myself have a pretty fast neon , but I like to know as much as possible about every vehicle out there.


Eventually in the long run I'd like to see some headwork and 264s or 272s in there and mayeb a big 16g or even better, plus some software and injectors

If your only planning for a 16g, go with a 190 pump. There is no need to go larger.

14b is correct for the turbo as long at its a 1g 5 speed

Be careful with that boost controller til you have some sort of fuel control. Also remember about the clutch because it might start slipping. But with that setup maybe low 13's.

Thanks guys. I read that you can port the stock O2 housing as well, rather than buy a new one? I'd honestly just tell him to buy a new one...I saw a few that vent the internal gate to the atmosphere.
