new 6bolt build from scratch

Hey everyone, well im kinda going back and forth on whether i should pick up a jdm 6bolt or build one i can get from a junk yard ie car-part.com... im looking at the yard direction because i've found a used cylinder head and block altogether 400-600... now of course i have no idea what condition its in... but i was going to take them to the machine shop and have the goodies done to them any way... and replace all internals with performance parts
question is ... would it be possible to receive block/head in a state where its unusuable? can the machine shop work on a block/head in any shape? i just dont want to pick up something that i wont be able to use...

junkyard motors are like building home made bombs ten might be freakin awesome but the next ten might throw a scrap iron fit depending on how much power u plan to build i wouldnt advise doing to much head work u can pull 500hp on a stock head with the right setup pm me if your interested in a good running 6 bolt i can hook u up!!
