I have read the forums alot, did some searches, found vfaq, and so forth, and I'm definitely impressed by the wealth of DSM knowledge and stuff on the net, as I'm coming from the StarQuest world and information is limited. I have a few questions, I have a 91 Talon, FWD turbo, 112k miles on it, has new clutch, new timing belt, Dejon intake with a 2g Mas, and a turbo XS RFL blowoff valve...I'm working on a full tuneup, fuel filter, etc, can you guys tell me a few "in the know" tips, things I definitely need to look at, or replace/test, the car seems to be running pretty strong, I have a data logging cable on its way so that will help. Also, quick question a friend of mine has a repair shop and has a professional fuel injection cleaning system that hooks up to the brake booster, and slowly drips fluid into the vaccum system, anyone familiar with this? it worked wonders on my other cars, but I want to make sure its safe for a turbo car as he has never performed the cleaning on one. Thanks for your time and I look forward to your responses.

also, the Dejon and 2g mas..is this an upgrade? the intake I understand but why would the other owner go to a 2g mas ?

I dont know if theres much of a difference between the 1st and 2nd gen MAS, the throttle bodies are where the 1g's are really better,
as far as the fuel injection cleaning, its like seafoam and a couple of other products out there, Seafoam works awesome, if your friends had good results with the stuff hes using go for it, itll blow some of the crud off of the valves and make her run a little smoother,
It wasnt a night and day difference when i did mine, but i was definitley noticable,
just make sure you change the oil afterwards, all the crap that it breaks loose off the walls of the block will work its way down into the pan

Yeah I just wasn't sure if you could use it, its kinda like an IV drip, it drips slowly into the brake booster and sucks all through the vac lines, and head and cleans everything out, the car smokes for a bit while its doing it, but it made a huge difference on my Chevy truck, but like I said we weren't sure how safe it was for the turbo cars. its actually a two step process it has the drip, and then a typical intank pour in cleaner..but yeah defintetly and oil change would be instore afterwards. But yeah I'm still looking for basic things I need to check and look out for as this car and engine is really new to me, but alot easier than my Conquest to figure out :)

The 2g mas is a very big upgrade for the 1g. They alow for alot more airflow compared to the 1g mas. The only downside is its too much for the stock fuel system to handle which means the car inturn runs lean with the 2g mas which obviously isnt good. The use of a 2g mas in a 1g requires some sort of fuel system upgrade. The use of 550cc injectors is the most common because they require little to no tuning at all with the use a 2g mas. You might be able to get by with an afc and FPR to max out the stock 450's. Might require more money if you go that route. You could get the B&M fuel pressure modifier which only allows you to raise FP which i think is around $70. The walbro 255 FP is another option. I cant remember exactly but i think you can get by with just that without the use aftermarket FPR because of it over running the stock FPR and it increase the FP slightly all on its own. Either way, the A/F ratio needs attention regardless 1 way or another with the 2g mas. How you go about doing it is up to you :talon:

I'd like to think that whoever took the time to do those nice Mods did away with the Stock Water to Oil Cooler - if not - do so quickly & only run Mitsu Oil Filters until you do - NICE LOOKING 91!!

I'm not really sure what the water to oil cooler looks like, can you explain it to me and where its located? Thanks for all the tips guys. Josh

Strange setup, first time I have ever seen something like that, if I don't have water in my oil am I ok? Also, can you remove the unit without much loss of cooling performance? Is there a write up on how to remove and bypass the unit? Thanks for the heads up.

Josh

Do a Search for Oil Coolers & all kindsa Threads will pop up - I just came off my 91 OFH (see my Gallery for pix) IMO in Florida you don't need the Low Oil Temp Oil Cooler Cutoff Valve found in the 90 OFH but you DEFINITELY need an Oil Cooler - as I said you may have an Air to Oil Cooler Mod already.

Is their a straight swap I can do from a different year to go with air cooled with minimal custom work? I have looked the car up and down and don't see any signs of the switch.. My conquest had like a sandwich plate to accept the air/oil cooler I'm assuming the talon is similar?

Josh

Alright so machV has the housing, two questions, it looks as if you have to do something with the timing cover to get the old housing off? and secondly, where and how do you block off the coolant lines that are already going down to the filter housing currently?

Josh

Yeah it seems like 1 bolt for the OFH is behind the Plastic Timing Cover - But IMO you don't need to pull your OFH - I repeat, SEE MY GALLERY for pix of an Air to Oil Cooler setup that works well off my 91 OFH - I just blanked off the Coolant Lines at the Thermo Housing & Coolant Pipe.

How hard is it to remove the timing cover part? I can get the housing and everything else I need cheap off a friends part car, but if its real involved to get the housing off I might not even mess with it, I would rather just buy a NEW water cooler and make sure I don't break it because I do my own oil changes.

Josh

Timing Cover is TOTAL PITA although I can't remember 100% that one of the OFH Mounting Bolts is behind it - New Water Cooler $200 - do the Oil Filter Relo Kit or do it like mine.

So what is involved with doing your setup, I looked at the pics but I'm not as much of a visual learner as I am just following procedure. Again thanks for all your help! Also, is there an online factory service manual for this car? how about a OEM parts catalog?

Josh

- Remove the big Oil Filter Bolt, THATS THE BOLT THE OIL FILTER SCREWS ONTO from your OFH, you'll need a deep well socket.

- Throw away the Water Cooler, they are nothing but a Time Bomb.

- Then cut the longest portion of the Oil Filter Bolt threads off & loctite that into your OFH.

- You will then Spin your Oil Filter straight on the OFH like a real car - you'll also have more clearance to your Exhaust Downpipe.

- Plumb up your Oil Cooler - my Gallery has pics. IMO IN FLORIDA you don't need the Low Oil Temp Oil Cooler Cutoff Valve found in the 90 OFH & the EVO OFH or via the Aftermarket.

- I bought my Air to Oil Cooler & hoses at Bumper to Bumper for less than $100.
