I'm currently trying to pick out a logger and fuel controller for my car. I dont really want to spend the money on a dsmlink and a eprom if i dont have to. Are there any other decent alternatives? I dont really want to spend alot of money if i dont have to. I do have a laptop so anything that i could use with it would be a plus. I've been looking at the SAFC and the pocketlogger, any opinions on this? thanks in advance, Andy

Are you planning on upgrading the injectors? If not, why do you want a piggyback? If you are upgrading injectors, what are you planning on going with? 550s? 650s?

If you're going with 550s, SAFC will probably be okay (others can chime in). The problem I see with 650s is that you end up with much more advanced timing. You're basically lying to the ECU telling it you have less airflow so that it will reduce the injector pulse widths. Although that lets you get the correct fuel flow with the larger injectors, the ECU is also basing your timing on less airflow which translates into more advanced timing (timing maps have retarded timing with increased airflow). 550s don't flow a lot more than 450s, so you don't have to lie as badly to the ECU, but I'm not sure if 650s is pushing it. If you plan on running high octane fuel or using water/meth injection, you can tolerate more advanced timing, but if not, you might run into knock problems.

This is admittedly based on my reading and not on experience, so you should check with others.

If you're not upgrading your injectors, you could just get pocketlogger and maybe up the stock boost on your T25 until it looks like you're either knocking or leaning out based on what the logger will be able to tell you. Actually, if you plan on doing anything to your motor/intake/turbo/exhaust, you should probably have some form of logger. I have pocketlogger, and it does the job, but there are other alternatives out there as well. Since you have a laptop, you might have more options, as some of the loggers are PC only.

Well I'm fighting my own tuning issues, but I currently have both PocketLogger and MMCd running on a Palm IIIc.

I like MMCd's color display and graphing WAY better than PocketLogger's, but PL does have a nice preset function. Other than that, they are virtually identical functionality wise. I always end up using MMCd. Also, MMCd is free... but you still need a cable. (Which is why I bought PocketLogger... cable and software for $75, and then download and use MMCd also if desired).

I understand you have a laptop, but the Palm IIIc is a good choice for a PDA as it is cheap, has a nice color display, and can be easily modded to always have power while running in the car. No more changing batteries or taking it inside to charge! You could use the laptop for serious tuning or with other PC-only software, and keep the PDA as a permanent monitoring device. For mine, I fabricated a nice aluminum bracket for it that bolts to the side of the console using an existing hole.

I found the Palm, serial cable, auto-charger (which I modified and mounted permanently under the console), and PC cradle at Gizmos2Go.com. I was able to find a new OEM unit, but there are also demo and refurbed units all over the place for cheap (like $50 or less)

Good luck!

I didn't think MMCd worked for a 2g.
