So I heard that if I were to buy an Eclipse it should be a GSX, can anyone confirm why? Are they easier/cheaper to mod? Are they better stock than other Eclipses?

I've been mainly looking at GSX's but if the other models were just good I'd look all around.

So can someone just help me out? Much appreciated.

GSX, usually because they are the most valuable. Best traction, etc.

I prefer GST's. Because I like how simple FWD is, and I don't plan on making a track monster out of mine.

As far as mods, they are all the same.

Only you know what is best for u....

What is the purpose of the car? Daily or weekend track time

Will you race it?

Do you car about gas milage?

1st gen or 2nd gen?

Why are you buying an eclipse?

If you just want a fun daily. Go with a GST. If you want to take it to the track I say GSX personally.

I just want something I can make fast. Not incredibly fast, but decent. It would be a daily driver and something to have fun in and learn more about before I get a really fast car.

Keep a look out for stock GSTs, TSIs and GSXs, keep mataince up and the car will treat you good, mod slowly and keep using this site for any info and upgrade paths. Don't be cheep with these cars because they will bite you back. This is a great site with all the answers you need.

Thanks for all the help guys, I've been looking at the DMS classifieds just now and it has some decent stuff in there. I don't know how much money I'll have to spend because I'm selling my truck so I'm guessing around 3000-3500 plus whatever I have in the bank by the time I sell it.

Be honest. How fast is fast in your description.
Fast for me is a low 14 to high 13 sec 1/4 car. That's all I need but others defer. If that is the case like me... gst will be plenty.
Everyone want's a gsx because it's all wheel drive. With that you also have extra problems awd drive brings.

But i think gsx looks better then a gst. Gsx also comes in less color choices. Gsx also has 6 gears like an evo mr...

J/k on the last part LOL

Fast for me would be about the same as you described. Something that can accelerate quick and sound nice. But I'll get to the exhaust and everything else once I get the car.

Haha I was about to rip you apart man! Wtf is this guy talking about?!?

But OP, the gsx is just the top of line model dsm, awd is what most people buy it for. Personally I found both a gst and gsx for sale, the gsx was only 500 bucks more so I splurged and got the "higher" model

Usually the way it goes is people break into DSM's with a n/t. Then they want a turbo. Then they want to be able to $h1t and git off the line, so they start looking for AWD. Skip those stages and get a TSi AWD, or a GSX (or if you can find it, and like the look of the 1g's, pick up a Laser RS Turbo). Not the best on fuel, especially when you start building them. I get between 18 and 22 combined with my 1g, with a big fuel system and a good sized turbo. Downside to the turbo, must run minimum 93 octane. And that stuff is expensive! Lol, but you can go fast! Once you get to know the car, you can push a bone stock, full weight DSM into the mid to high 13's.

Guy above, don't forget the TSi AWD and the Laser RS Turbo AWD. True the GSX is the top of the line wearing the Mitsu badge but you have the Chrysler cousins too!

Welcome to the site.

A 1g dsm is the best option as far as the strength of the block, and I would recommend getting the awd version and forget about converting it to awd later. it is much easier [and cheaper] to get a 1g awd then to mod a front wheel drive 1g to be an awd.[this goes for 2gs as well]

also, the 1gs are of the two, the least costly $$$$

however, if you find a 2g gsx at a reasonable price it may be worth considering.

as for getting more power out of the motor it is best to drive these cars stock, then gradually make improvements as you go, only after taking care of maintenance items as listed on this site in the tech sections.

good luck.

I have a 95 Talon TSI AWD that I traded a car that i bought for $800, It only had a bad Diff & was bone stock. Turning it into my track car

Then I picked up a 98 GSX Automatic for $1100 with bad ball joints & bone stock with a brand new never installed carbon fiber rear hatch. Used as my daily.

You can easily get a good running car for under 2K & have plenty to do the basic bolt on mods
