I need to get an aftermarket exhaust on my car. I heard i should just take it to the local exhaust place an have them make me a custom 3" exhaust. People told me that if you buy a greddy or hks or any other kind your pretty much just paying for the name.. I just want to know if thats true

Yes. Local or ebay/craigslist is your friend. Search the ebay exhaust thread.

Do you think 3" is overkill if my car isn't heavily mod'ed? What kind of muffler do you have/recommend?

I highly recommend going onto eBay Motors - Autos, Used Cars, Motorcycles, Boats, Trucks, Parts, Accessories, RVs and Other Vehicles and look for an exhaust! If you want something nice and sounds good. My Accord had a 2.75" Exhaust from ebay, I loved it! Sounded Great. My 94 Talon AWD has a 3" turbo back from ebay. My friend Curtis's 97 GST has a 3" Turbo back from Ebay. They all sound great and are really nice quality. I'm about to modify mine and replace all the flanges with vband and make it so I can swap out the muffler easily just for those ass hole cops that wanna give me a ticket for modified exhaust, even tho it isn't illegal.

When I got my first exhaust that I bought from a supplier on Ebay, I was astaunished at the quality of the welds and the pipes and everything. I wanted to go running around hitting people with the Axle Back Portion as hard as possible LOL

For a turbo I dont think that 3" is overkill, now if you were N/T I would say it would be. It also depends on what kind of look you are wanting. I know that Vibrant makes some good "stealth" mufflers. I have one that has 2 3" outlets. Looks very similar to the stock muffler. I think they are powdercoated or maybe just painted black. So you wont get any negative attention from cops and the dumbasses that wanna steal mufflers(that is what happend to me).

For a stock Turbo DSM, 3" technically is overkill. But if you think like everyone else, its considered a supporting mod. A 2.5" would be better for a stock turbo DSM, but the second you start upgrading that car that exhaust will become restrictive and you'll have to buy another one. So you'll save money in the long run to just get a 3" and be done with it. Only way you'll need more than that is if you are pushing some major boost which 90% of us never need to do.
