I have a 99 mitsubishi eclipse rs with the 420a in it. I'm new to cars and I'm not looking for a car with stupid amounts of horsepower and torque I just want to build my car and call it my own. But I'm wondering is swapping my 420a out for a 4g63 a must or is the 420 a fine my buddy is trying to get me to swap it out with a lancer evo 8 engine. Also if I swap the engine out am I going to have to do the same with the transmission. What kind of thing am I going to have to look out for so I don't screw up my car any help will be greatly appreciated.

Man just sell your car and buy a gst or gsx. Plain and simple. This question is talked about frequently and the end result is the same pretty much. They are not expensive to buy. If you don't want horsepower and torque just keep the gs you have.

Thanks for the advice I'm really in love with this car as it is my daily driver but I'm just looking for a little extra pep. Farther on down the road I plan on getting something with a bit more power but for right now I'm trying to learn all I can with this cheap inexpensive little car. Do y'all have any advice on what I can do to this right now with out it becoming ricerish besides not throwing a fart can on it.

I would check out the 420a section. http://www.dsmtuners.com/threads/first-modifications.272662/

Things I would do that are just "bolt on" would be look into something like a K&N cone filter. Maybe make a filter box and cold air system. Header and exhaust. Some nice plug wires and plugs. How much will that get you Hp wise? No idea. Maybe noticeable on the azz dyno.

I have a 420a and 4g63.... not much you can do to the 420a.. I went with a cold air intake, header, fatter plug wires for better spark along with a msd coil.. ngk plugs.... thats really all you can do cheap... if you want to spend more replace exhaust. . Buy a better torque converter if its an auto... but that costs more and more...

Whsat would be some good brands to look into while im doing this? Are there specific things that i need to look for so i dont get the wrong item? Are there some brands that work better than others>

I've seen some fast 420a but its just isn't worth it to pour money into get the gsx LOL

If your not used to anything faster then your rs. Id say stick with it and have your fun, save in the meanwhile so when you get bored of it and get bit by the hp bug, you can upgrade to a higher model. Maybe the gs-t. In my area its rare if a gsx pops up but not for long.

Plus from what i know the 420a cannot support more than 7-8psi
(Please correct me if im wrong)

*edit* since your new to cars, buy a service manual, and just ride along til stuff breaks, thrn replace.
That way when you do decide to upgrade you wont be so lost.
Goodluck!

i agree dont spend a dime on a bunch of mods that wont amount to much, save for the gst or gsx. if you want to swap a 4g63t do it into a car that didnt come with it from the factory. mitsu will always do it better than we can
