I'm in the process of a motor rebuild and I figure I might as well replace the crank bearings whille its all apart. The problem is I can't figure out which ones I need. I have no colors anywhere so I can't figure out how to decide which bearings match up with my crank. Can someone help me??

Colors?

Are you using your stock crank? Are you turning the crank or are the journals all good with no scratches or scoring? If the crank is good and you are not turning it, Just go to a parts store and get Clevite 77 Standard size main and rod bearings.

no crank is unturned ... no scrathes or anything. The rod bearings I got I'm just confused about the mains. I work at the dealership so I want to get it from there since I get htem for a decent price and I need them by this weekend. Any parts store would have them like auto zone or pep boys even? So there is only 1 standard size? The colors are only for when you replace the crank or turn the crank as well?

Ive never heard of colors, maybe thats a mitsu bearing thing. The clevites I have just say 25mm on them. Because my crank had a 10 turn done to it.
Standard size should be all you need.

ok so if I were to go to auto zone and say I need standard size crank bearings for a 1997 gsx there's no way to get the wrong ones? Unless the dude grabs them by accident but I mean there's only 1 option really right?

Yes, if you specify standard you should get standard. Make sure he gets you all the mains and thrust bearing.

I am pretty sure that all the turbo DSMs as well as 1g N/T have the same mains. So unless they give you 2gnt bearings they should be the correct ones. It would be pretty hard for them to screw it up, but still could happen.

You have a 2g right?

If you have a 1g then there is only one size for the crank. You can got to the parts store and just order a standard size, or oversized bearing. Make sure you at least plastigauge the journals and bearings to insure you have the right size bearings.

If you own a 2g there are 2 sets of roman numerals stamped in the block near the front cover where the oil pan attaches to the block. Write them down in order. You'll need to call a dealership so that they can match the roman numerals with the correct size bearings.

For some reason during the 1g ->2g switch over, Mitsubishi did not standardize their journal sizes so that you could just buy one size bearing that would fit all. I guess this was an effort to keep from throwing away cranks that were machined undersized or something.

*Forgot to add, make absolutely sure that you follow the procedure to properly align the thrust bearing. If you do not, you will get CW no question.

They are there. Look closely at the block and you will find them. EVERY Mitsubishi block has them, even the 6 bolt blocks. They will look like slight impressions in the block.

There should be two columns, one with 5 rows (mains) numbered from I to III and another with 4 rows (rods) numbered I to III, if I remember correctly. The location of the numbers should be at the front of the block near the front cover, crank pulley , on the right hand side near the front part of the oil pan (oil drain plug denotes front of the pan).

I'll try to post a pic. tonight of what I am talking about.

Aaacckkk. I had a brain fart. I guess I've been up too long.

What you are looking for is on the rear main seal side, not near the front cover.

This pic is from a 6bolt block but its the same on the 7 bolt with the exception that there are two rows. See the circled areas.
