I just bought me a 1996 Eclipse RS. I have only owned Hondas and Acuras and tuned with them so I figured Iam try a DSM now.
Anways the RS has approx. 120K miles on it n runs great no promblems. I want to turbo it RS-T and just have fun with it. I need help from you guys tho cuz I have sum questions about the whole thing.
1st- What turbo do i need to go with. and how many psi will be safe?
2nd- What all do I need for that to bolt on? that way I can be looking for the parts.

My email is [email protected]
and AOL IM : Ni99azb4hoez

If u can help me out that would be great! Please let me know so I can get started on my NEW DSM PROJECT!

your mitsu eclipse rs has the chrysler 2L 420a engine, i would assume that there is a sub thread here somewhere, but i dont know because i dont look into that engine much... the turbo eclipses have the mitsubishi 4g63 engine,... so you see why most people just ditch the rs and buy a gst, although some do buy turbokits from some sites out there... i dont have any links, but someone will come soon enough with one, or you can search for: 420a turbo, and your answer should be found easily.... basically the differences, (besides being a completely different block) are compression ratio, and what you would need would be, new pistons (to lower the compression ratio), a turbo, mostlikely a 16g or 14b, its best to do your own research and deside which is best for you..., a new exaust manifold, 02 housing, you might be able to use your stock downpipe but i highly doubt it, intake, intercooler (most important, intercooler=knock prevention, along with a handful of hp), more fuel, and probably better ignition.....

this is why most people just buy a preturboed eclipse rather than turbo the N/A eclipses....

Thanks for the help man, also I have this posted on other sites as well, and noone has said anything about lowering the comperation, is a have to? j/w

Also i heard sum kit called hahn kits, but looked into it and its expensive man stage 1 is like 2,995! thats lot more then waht i want to spend I just want to run like 5psi of boost j/w could i get a 14b turob, or t25 or w.e turbo n then jst buy all my other odd n ends and get it on n be OK. thnaks again man any help will do.

JJ

t-25 at 5 psi.. shouldnt need an intercooler. you could turbo that car for under 1500 easily. I used to have a 2gnt and I was getting ready to turbo it but backed out of it. Have a 1g awd and love it to death.

I would like you to first do some researching on the difference between the 420a rs/gs and the 4g63 gs-t/gsx, if you did not know that your car has a neon engine and is totally different from the factory turbo mistubishi motors, you may find the information very valuable. Otherwise, there is a very good writeup in the tech articles on this site on how to peice together your own 420a turbo kit here - http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=181134

You might want to change your vehicle profile. You aren't turbo yet.

I personally own an rs-t and i am buying a TSI awd this weekend so i have tasted a little bit of both worlds. It is a lot of work to turbo the rs eclipse, but the motor seems to respond well to the boost. Only boost to about 7lbs before you get some lower comp pistons, after that just get some good fuel components and boost away! go to www.2gnt.com those guys have their rs-t 's running in the 12second range! But i just have to say i love my 2gnt... BUT its not AWD....

My man has it right go to 2gnt.com to get a bunch of info. That or talk to chris gsgoingfast He did a write up for putting a turbo kit togather for under 1000. But setup wise Personally I feel that the 4g63 is unrelibale as a turbo motor. Crank walk anyone? The 420a can handle around 8-10 psi without any bottom end mods. If your thinking of getting a turbo its a little more involved than buying a turbo and a manifold. If you want to turbo your car here is a little list of what you will need for your 420a to support it.

cayt back exaust highly recomended
turbo
mainfold
downpipe
an oil line to turbo
an line to oil pan
intank fuel pump
fmu or sfmu
bov
ic piping
smic or fmic
boost,egt,fuel pressure,digital a/f gauges
cone filter
ML or FCD
there is problay more that i am forgetting right now. If you want a cheap kit www.conceptillusions.com 1st stage kit runs about 1300. Comes with almost everything. FYI first thing to go under boost for our motors are the piston rings, then the rods bending.

I don't want to start a NT vs. turbo debate, but that is the most rediculous statement I've heard yet.. :boring:

if anyone feels like argueing with me, PM me.. and i'll be happy to point out threads and different arguements negating his statement/opinion.

Yeah, that argument is really played out! and NO the 4g63t isnt an unreliable motor as far as boost goes, especially not compared to the 420a, trust me, i have both... just do a search.

Please don't spread mis information about the NT Vs. Turbo stuff there is no information to spread a turbo motor is better in every way shape and form to a non turbo with turbo conversion.

Wow, talk about a hypocritical statement.

Perhapse I over simplified, a turbo engine is meant to run a turbo plain and simple the internals are meant to take the added stress of the increased airflow though the engine.

A non turbo engine with a turbo was never meant to be a turbo engine its a compromise less bost more change of breakage etc...

Bottom line any motor can be good with enough cash spent.

Well it's not technically. The 4G63 will make more HP dollar for dollar than the 420a upto a certian point, no matter what. With enough money spent, both motors would make the same HP for the same money but that would take fully built motor and head and full management systems on both motors. Then they would make equal HP for equal money. You're then into the $10,000 to $15,000 in modifications territory. A Honda motor can do the same for the same money. So really eventually both platforms have the same potential.

However from a basic bolt on stand point the 4G63 has gone into 10s on the stock motor, the 420a is not even close. Getting a 4G63 into the 12's has been done with $1000 in mods, 420a not even close.

Even after $15000 spent and both motors making 500whp (4G63 and 420a) your still left with a FWD car by choosing the N/T route for a build up. At the track thats not a dis-advantage because of slicks, on the street a high HP fwd car just isn't that much fun. My GTi had 350whp and it sucked.

I think we're getting away from the topic here though guys, no need to start another flame war, and I think DSMJim put it best as far as the comparison of the 4g63 and the 420A. People have preferences, let them decide the route they want to take.

Anywho, to answer the question posed in this thread, I suggest you do some research. an NT DSM can still be quick, but it won't be cheap. Sure, you could add a custom kit using a 14b or a t25, but you will eventually end up replacing that, so why do it in the first place? First of all your RS has 120K. If left alone, it will most likely take you much farther than 120K(if well maintained, right now I'm at 152,xxx). If turbo'd, the reliabilty could falter. Thus, i suggest having the motor rebuilt, and while your at it, stuff in some stronger internals, as now you can be assured of reliabilty (at least from the motor) and then you have an excellent platform on which to build some serious power. Then you can install your turbo, or nitrous, or whatever floats your boat.

Or, like everyone else says buy a Turbo DSM. Give that little N/T some love. :D

I wouldn't try to advise anyone against boosting a 420A. It's definitely fun and capable if done correctly. But I would say that calling the 4G63 unreliable because of the crankwalk issue is a stretch. If you're that concerned about crankwalk, fine. Telling people not to get a 4G63 because of the crankwalk possibility is almost like telling everyone not to eat chocolate for fear of getting diabetes. It's not that cut and dry. There's plenty of reading that should be done on the issue.

Don't boost a 420A because you're afraid to go with a 4G63. Do it because you want a boosted 420A. Any motor that makes double the horsepower it was intended to make has the potential of being unreliable. Do it right and either motor will be a good choice.

To the original poster, read up:

Like Chris said either motor is good for a turbo if it's done right. Just remember the higher mileage on the project engine the lower the miles you will get out of it once your turbo/up the boost it.

The 4g63 has already proven it's capability as a forced induction engine. I think calling it unreliable is simply mis-information. I also feel that alot of the problems boosting a 420A are directly connected to the lack of maintenance/repairs and the poor installation or mis-use of the turbo kit.

Doug your right me calling the 4g63 an unreliable motor was crude. I have friends with 6 and 7 bolt 4g63's and not many of them can complain. I guess its just the love for a 2gnt in me. I hade a choice to buy my 98 rs hardtop or a 99 gst hard top but I chose the rs because I think its cooler to have a sleeper car oppose to a car that looks fast and is naturally fast. I don't think I did a good job though because non car people think the eclipse is a fast car, and I also like the reaction they get when I tell them its a 4cyl. Thanks for the intimadiation to everyone who rips around in a 4g63. Plus the 420a does have a major disavantage to it, besides the week rings and rods... most 2gnt-t owners can tell you that sometimes their car acts funny and its a pain in the ass to solve. If you got to 2gnt.com and go into the turbo tech fourm you'll see that everyone has problems for me one major one is the fuel supply. I think its great how you can slap a MBC on a 4g63 turn her up a little and not worry about leaning out. For me I have to make sure that I have 3g in my motor, a type of on board computer, and a friggen fuel system to boot. For the record I don't hate 4g63's, I just like 420a's better. I am sorry if I offended you.
