I'm in quite the hitch. I should have everything to get my car back on the street in about 4 weeks - EXCEPT MY RINGS. Last year I had my machinist fix a 6 bolt I got for a cheap price, he said .030 overbore would takeout the damage in one of the cylinders, I found a set of NPR 2g Pistons 0.030 and everything was happy. The crank was bad and that got the motor put on the side lines.

This year I've taken the motor apart, fresh crank, rods are good, pistons are good, cylinders are getting a deglazing...now I can't find 0.030 rings if my life depended on it. It's as if they stopped existing. SIM said it was a shot in the dark that they'd be able to get ahold of them and in a reasonable time frame. I've searched up and down ebay, google shopping, all over the place. Does anyone here know where to find these at?

Ok, another angle. I've found half a million piston ring threads and it seems you can use other branded rings with other branded pistons - WITHIN REASON. What would be an alternative ring to use with my NPR 2g Pistons? Can I even do that?

One last thing...I still have the rings that were on the pistons. They had 1000 miles on them when a tick developed (crank/rod issue). They were broke in well from the looks of it...worse case scenario - can I re-use them?

Thanks for reading :/

I would get a number and call the mnf. they might be a custom made ring them or possibly a different ring that gets cut to fit.

Would chrome rings matter vs the stock like ones? I think they are steel.

Edit: ...crap, they are for 1g pistons :(.

I didn't notice the part about the 2g pistons in your 6-bolt. You are going to have to measure the rings, and the depth of the oil ring groove to make sure you are getting the right ring pack.

2g Groove Sizes: 1.2 1.5 2.8
1g Groove Sizes: 1.2 1.5 3.0

That sound right? What about the guys at Total Seal? They seem to make all sorts of rings.

Pistons are machined to accept a specific ring. You cannot take any ring set and put them on your pistons.

I would mic the bores to see exactly what size they are. I'd bet that your engine is +.020". Boring an engine .030" is standard with domestic engines and the machinst may have told you that just as second nature. Since there are no .030" over rings, I'd be that there are also no .030" over pistons which means yours would be .020.

heh, if he didn't tell me it would take 0.030" overbore to fix a cylinder, and I didn't order 0.030" pistons - then I'd ask but I'm sure they can't lie about what they put on the box. Through parts interchange - Hastings makes the rings for these pistons, suppose to be the same as NPR.

My machinist was able to get a set of rings from Hastings. They list NPR part numbers and cross reference them with theirs, things should work out great from here.
