Hello fellow DSMers,

I recently installed a new clutch into my Talon, and realized after putting everything back together that I had a stray bolt left over! My father (who helped me with this installation) and I have yet to find where it goes, but maybe a DSM guru could help us out.

Below/attached is a picture:

If the picture is too blurry, here are the specs:
  • 6.5 cm in length
  • 2 cm of thread
  • washer
  • locking washer
  • 10 mm head
  • very clean shaft (contained oil?)

Here are also some of the things we removed during the swap that may help:
  • clutch
  • transfer case
  • battery box and housing
  • transmission (duh)
  • exhaust between cat and down-pipe
  • starter solenoid
  • gusset and middle cross-member

Thank you for reading, I hope someone can help. ;)

Solution
Im thinking its the bolt at the back of the transmission that bolts the tranny to the block. Since you have one left and i know is the 12mm one.

I know it isn't for the starter or slave cylinder, I just checked they're all in place.

I'll check the one for the tranny to the block.

Christ.. I was looking for where that bolt goes, and instead I found a nice big crack in my transmission rear cover where all the oil has been leaking out.

It's always something.

:(

Guess I can't get my transmission rebuilt if it's messed up like this..

yep, pull the cover and see how bad the gears are. you can get all the parts to fix it from mitsubishigraveyard.com. Gary is a great guy to deal with. very good parts, and cheap.
you can weld the cover , but you can probably get it from Gary for 25.00
probably get both fifth gears for 40.00
also order two new end nuts. dont re-use the old ones!!

pull the cover and take me some more pics of the damage.

I'm not much of a grease monkey, and unfortunately for my transmission I never take it off to check how tight the nuts are..

I had a small crack and when tre rebuilt mine, they fixed it didnt even need a weld. Its been doing great with over 10,000 miles on it.

Out of all of the things that you took out, being that a 10mm head equates to an M8 bolt (8mm), the transfer case might be the ticket. But deep down I think those are M10 (10mm) bolts. Honestly, it looks like a bolt that bolts the TB elbow to the throttle body, see:

Bolt length 65mm, bolt size M8 (8mm), thread/pitch 1.25.

nope its the backside bottom trans to engine mounting bolt.

Transfer case bolts are 12mm 1.25

Yes, rear trans bolt! The bolt thats causing me an issue. Its right by the rear motor mount. It threads into the transmission through the block. Both sides are threaded, which is why its a smaller bolt than the others.

**edit** infact I just got back from tightening that bolt in the snow with a chill factor of below 0 :)
