I just bought a 1990 Talon ES with a 4g63. The gentleman said it just needed that timing belt replaced as it was fraying when he drove it down the road. I noticed first hand there is not any tension when i move the Cam gears, so i took the valve cover off. Every rocker arm was sitting in the head, and one had even split in half. i took the cams off and there are several huge gouges in the intake cam. I then decided to see if the crank pulley would line up with its respectful timing mark and it will only go a quarter rotation counter/clockwise before it catches on something. Then when i removed the spark plugs #1 cylinder plug was smashed as if the piston slammed up into it. I'm going to continue tearing the engine down tomorrow, but if anyone has an idea as to what might be the culprit, advice would be greatly appreciated.

I think a better question would be, "Any idea what's not wrong with it?"

With what you are saying it sounds like the timing was off so the valves are probably trashed, there were gouges on the cams and bearings so sounds like there wasn't oil circulating, and the crank won't rotate so could be seized or spun bearings downstairs too.

I hope you didn't pay much for it. I bought my DSM (it was a 4G63 N/T back then) with a snapped belt and therefore a trashed head for $250.

While its down you might want to consider throwing some forged pistons in it and doing a turbo swap ;)

you could have broke the head off of a valve in the #1 cylinder; that could be what hit the plug. Hopefully you didn't spin a rod bearing. It sounds like it just jumped time and broke a valve. What kind of cams do you have. If they are very agressive they will really tear things up when it jumps time.

Car definitely jumped time.

I bought a similar car knowing that the belt had broken....I had planned on parting the car out but I ended up fixing it and the girlfriend is still driving it to this day. The culprit of the broken belt in my car's situation was a local tire change joint did the previous owner a "favor" by replacing the rusted-out oil pan....within 200 miles, the belt was destroyed. Yup, they put the wrong bolts back into the wrong holes. LOL

Yeah the swap has been on the agenda before this was noticed. I only paid 200 bucks for it so I can't really complain. Ill post some pics of the aftermath once I get it all disassembled. Thanks.
