I'm still building my engine. We took a look at my flywheel yesterday and it was rusted all to hell from the hurricane weather and whatnot.

SO now i'm faced with a delimma. I called my local tune shop and asked them about a aftermarket flywheel vs a stock one. All they said is that it would help my car get through its RPM band faster...is that all its good for?

ANd if thats the case shoudl i just get new stock one?

If the after market flywheel has some sort of benefit ...which one should i get?

A lighter flywheel will also allow you to match engine RPM's to the transmission quicker.

I have the Fidanza wheel, you have to launch at a slightly higher RPM if you're drag racing, but for downshifting and what not, it's beautiful.

ya if ur building a full on drag car then a lightened flywheel is good, but if ur gonna be using this as ur street car then u might want to consider just a medium weight flywheel.

Part of the reason why the car coasts so good when u dont have ur foot on the gas is the momentum from the stock, heavy flywheel. If u put a really light flywheel on there, then of course it will accelerate faster and get the engine moving a lot quicker, but when u take ur foot off the gas it will feel like u have the parking brake on cause the flywheel is so light it doesnt have enough momentum to keep the entire drivetrain spinning with its givin force.

If u like saving gas whenever u can thats something u should think about, if u just want fast ass drag car then light flywheels will help u get that beast accelerating faster.

WOW..thank you for that.

I dont want a full drag car I just need a new flywheel.

SO with that in mind which medium weight should i go with

I agree with everything he just said. ^^^ I also have the Fidanza flywheel and I love it. They dont add HP, but they "free up" wasted HP. They are also stronger than stock. I would recommend getting one. :thumb:

PS. - My Fidanza weighs 8.5lbs. and it's great for street use. :dsm:

The topic of a lightened flywheel vs stock has been discussed to death on this forum. A lightened flywheel actually does increase horsepower. Applying the same power to spin up a lighter flywheel will inrease the rotational acceleration (it takes less time to go from 1000rpm to 7000rpm, which is a increase in accleration, which is also an increase in POWER) . Ask any physics major or mechanical engineer. Only bad thing is that your drag launches will suffer because less inertia is stored in the rotating mass (because there is LESS rotating mass) so when you launch from 6k your engine will bog down much quicker to lower rpms and requires more throttle input off the line than a heavier flywheel (the lighter flywheel also DE-accelerates much quicker than stock flywheel). Do a search you will find hundreds of threads on the different aftermarket flywheels. Oh and I live north of DC, the hurricane also rusted my flywheel!

I have the Fidanza on my daily driven car. Wish I would have got an ACT Streetlite instead. Low RPM driveability suffers with the Fidanza because it is too light to keep the engine rotating at low RPM.
