Good evening,

I happened to purchase a turbo charger from a fellow who claimed it was a 16g.

I bought the turbo with the condition that it would need a rebuild, which I bought the kit for. Upon disassembly, I began to search the serial number on the compressor cover and found some seemingly bad things out.

I have the following pictures and some conclusions of my own, but I wanted to get some other opinions on what I may have on my hands here.

I think that I have a 14b compressor cover with 16g wheels. Please correct me if I am wrong about this.

Compressor wheel - 60mm
Exhaust wheel - 50mm

Thanks for any info! I'll let the pictures do the talking.

Most 16g's and 18gs will come in a mitsu tdo5h compressor housing.

Well of course, but that's not what the issue is. The numbers on the compressor housing prove it's indeed a machined 14b housing, but seriously to the OP; I wouldn't worry about it. A machined 14b compressor housing vs a standard 16g compressor housing is a non-issue as far as performance goes. Sure the 16g comes from the factory with a larger inlet, but if the 14b housing can accommodate the 16g wheel then you have nothing to worry about vs a normal 16g.

If it has a 7cm turbine housing then all is good and you may as well call it a 16g in all reality. The bearing housings are identical and there is no difference between the TDO5H turbine wheel from a 14b or 16g. That compressor wheel shows some wear, but it is in fine used shape. You absolutely have to have the turbine wheel straightened and polished before re-installation if you're not planning on a full VSR balance. Just get yourself a dial indicator and base if you don't already have one and make sure the tolerances are within OEM guidelines after the rebuild and you should be fine.

Mitsu turbos respond to rebuilds fairly well if proper internals are used and tolerances are checked. They are factory balanced, so you can forgo a true balance if no contact has been made with the housings (yours hasn't from the pictures), but you absolutely 100% have to have that shaft straightened as it will be slightly bent from removing the compressor nut. Have them polish it while it's in for the straightening to ensure a good surface for the new bearings as well. I really wouldn't be miffed about it having a 14b compressor cover on it though as long as it's got the 7cm turbine housing.
