I have read alot on the N1 and i havent heard of anyone elses n1 being quiet. I thought I just had a backed up cat, so today I installed a test pipe in place of the cat but the car is still really quiet, I didnt notice any change in the sound. I bought the exhaust used, and it has been in my car for a few months. Any ideas as to why its so quite? Could it possibly be an exhaust leak? Thanks for any help.

are you running just a cat-back with the stock downpipe? if so, its probably because youre running the stock downpipe. my friend has the n1 catback on his car (w/ the stock dp) and its not that loud at all. if it was an exhaust leak you would hear a hissing sound coming from where it was leaking.

I am looking for a good nice quite one. So maybe with any luck when i buy an n1 it will be nice and quite too!

Yea, Mine used to seem kinda loud to me, but then I ran open downpipe for a day when my N1 downpipe was at the exhaust shop for wideband o2 bung install. Put the stocker on there and it made a 1 ft long gap or so...I lost the ability to hear myself think at WOT, and since then with the exhaust hooked up its seems real quiet.

i also have an n1 and when i put just the cat back on i noticed it was also pretty quiet, the same with my buddies 06 wrx. he got a hks cat back and their made to be reasonably quiet cause their well manufactured. Trust me on this though. Get yourself a 3 inch down pipe and you wont have any problems of being quiet. After i put mine on my cat back was already kind of broken in and it made the exhaust alot louder and gave it a nicer tone. Now all the time at night i get in shit for waking people up :)

I have the N1 turbo-back without a cat, and the exhaust is really just a low rumble at low rpm/pedal position. It's only under throttle that it gets loud. I would definitely buy this system again.

Your on a stock turbo so the exhaust is going to be pretty quite since the stock turbine housing is such a large restriction. Secondly if you have an n1 and you are fwd the resonator in the exhaust necks down to like 1.5" do not be fooled by the outer pipe diameter it is super small inside the resonator. I recomend chopping that thing out and replacing it with a true 3" pipe. You should hear my car with a 30r and a true full 3" turboback its obnoiusly loud, loud enough to where I don't like driving the car anymore.

And lastly remember this

the smaller the turbine housing the quiter the exhaust and the louder the wastegate. The larger the turbine housing is the louder the exhaust will be and the quiter the wastegate will be.

interesting......

And I dont see why ppl complain about quiet-ish exhaust systems. I wish mines were quieter. Means less attention from police when you get on it. And you wont be as noticeable everywhere you go... ( which some ppl actually want this obviously. )
The only thing loud I want about my car is the turbo spooling up, the bov, and the two 12s in the back thumping from time to time..:thumb:

Very true. I got a N1 with stock turbo, and the thing is surprisingly quite, I like it, not ricer at all. But when the wastgate opens, like when cruising up a hill, its louder then the exhaust.

I'm assuming you have the silencer removed... correct?

I have the Apexi N1 (I bought it used too) with an RRE downpipe and my car isn't that loud either. My guess is your exhaust is fine... it just isn't as loud as you expected.

I am running an N1 with a N1 downpipe and it is not that loud. It was extremely quite when I first installed it, actually more quite than the stock exhaust, but it has gotten louder over time. It sounds good at idle and has a deep throaty sound at WOT (or use to, got a O2 dump now so that's all I hear) Definately a wise choice if you are looking for something that is going to last a while and not bust an ear drum.

I have a custom RRE downpipe and 3" Espelir system (it's like the N1) and it isn't that loud either. But keep in mind your turbo is also acting like a muffler, so don't expect it to be extremely loud. That's why those uncorked Honda's are so loud (they're also revving a lot higher) My brother's stock SRT-4 is hands down louder than my Eclipse because the stock SRT has no muffler.

My n1 is extremely loud. If I'm backed up to the house, it rattles everything inside the house.

I have the interior stripped at the moment, so it's really loud on the inside of the car as well. I have hks 272's, true 3" downpipe, no cat, big tubo, and a 1000 rpm idle .. so that might be part of it.

I agree with some of the others about the downpipe being to small, but I don't think that is the main reason. Most exhaust are quite when first get them. Especially, if you are not running anything to serious. Hks is the same way. When you install some cams, your exhaust tone will change alot. Aftermarket turbo will give you a slight change in tone.

I looked at your profile. If it is up to date, it doesn't look like you have started to go all out yet. I believe that this is why you are not noticing any change in tone with your exhaust.

Well here's my two cents on the Apexi N1 exhaust... It's crap. I recently got a full 3 inch exhaust and it is great. When I looked at my Apexi N1 catback I noticed that the resonator on the setup shrunk from 3" to like 1 7/8 inch. One top of that the setup wasn't even stainless steel. i figure If I'm going to pay like $500+ for a catback it should at least be SS. After getting rid of that exhaust, not only can i boost more, it the car instantly felt different. So my conclusion, Apexi N1 makes a ok exhaust, but the resonator is extremely restrictive and it's not SS, but some people live by Apexi N1, so it's more personal preference.

I own the N1 and i like it. Yes it is quiet when not at wot, but it will in get louder once it is broken in some. The thing i like about the n1 is that it i can drive and have a conversation and not have to yell over the extremely loud exhaust tone, but at the same time people outside know you have a nice exhaust system.

I got the N1 and the N1 dp and i really like it almost sounds beefy and not "rice" i really like it i would recomend it to anyone with a dsm.
