Hello, I am new to posting on this site but having been reading the tech articles and working on my cars for years now. I recently acquired a 1992 Talon TSI AWD auto with 80k miles. The first day I had the car it started smoking and died. After reconnecting a starter wire that wiggled off when it died I got it to start. It was making loud knock, I instantly shut it off and began to pull the engine. With the engine out I diagnosed a failed oil pump/ balance shaft. I am ready to do an engine freshening and need advice. Here is what I have planned so far.....
-New OEM oil pump
-DSM graveyard B/S delete
-Full fel pro gasket kit
-New OEM timing kit
-Anything else while im in there?
The car already had arp head studs and an 85.5mm Cometic metal head gasket. The head looks like it has minor imperfections. I plan on cleaning the engine block with chemicals and get it as clean as possible. My worry is the head. Should I suck it up and pay to get it disassembled, decked, and rebuilt. Or can is there a solid DIY method to clean it up. I of course plan to check valve clearences and flatness on both the head and deck. I should also add that I plan to use the composite fel pro head gasket.
Sorry if this is the wrong section or too lengthy.
Thanks for reading.
Any help would be appreciated.
