im not quite sure why but my car is going through alot of gas, probably close to double what it should. Its got new plugs and i dont think its the O2 sensors ( i dont have a check engine light on) any idea why im burning through so much?

timing is good, plugs are new, and od is on. Im not sure if the car is rich because ive been waiting for my guage pod so i can hook up my a/f ratio guage

if its just a cheap a/f ratio gauge, its not going to tell you anything.

my 95 tsi was burning gas for awhile and once in a while would run weird at idle. turned out one of the injectors was leaking.

it still might be bad O2 sensor. I know when mine was bad and i reset the ECU, it took me as much as 200-250 miles for the CEL to go on....I was getting 14MPG during that time....so your O2 sensor might still be bad....

My o2 sensor was DEAD, as on 0v coming from it at all times, and I didn't have a single code thrown, no CEL ever. Just horrible horrible mileage.

My gas mileage is under 200 miles a full tank. Im having similiar problems. My A/F gauges reads up and down after the cars warm but i can feel the car studder at idle when the gauge goes lean then back to normal idle when it hits rich. Im clueless, the car act screwy at idle, i get a slight popping which kinda sounds like a misfire, new plugs, wires, and coil pack didnt fix it.

If you can get your hands on a WB then that should tell you a lot, see if anyone has one near you. Or if you can afford one, then its one the best things you can own. How does the car idle, and can you smell fuel or (burn your eyes) from the exhaust? See if its dumping fuel at idle. When you get on it, is it dumping smoke at WOT (will do it that when running extremely rich sometimes). You could always replace the O2 and we what happens, if you cannot get a WB.

Autometer and other non WB, will do that at idle. Rich to lean and back an forth is normal for one of those.

I realize thats normal but why does the car studder and pop when it goes to the lean side at idle?

So it pops as well, does it backfire? Can you smell fuel from the exhaust at idle, enough to burn your eyes? When you start it does it start right up, or does it take a while to start, then pop?

You could also wait for it to start to studder and pop at idle, shut the car off immediately while its doing it, and look at your plugs, that way you will know what its doing. I never trust non WB A/F guages, ever.

No I cant smell fuel, when I go to start the car it usually takes about 5-6 revolutions then it fires up. Its not a quick starter, then it idles and i can here the pop every couple seconds and you can see the rpm's slightly go down then back up. The stock boost gauge does the same with vaccum. I never get any backfiring.

my car does the same exact thing and i have no clue why

ColdAudio

Its been a while and since then I replaced the plugs, wires, coil pack, and finally ecu. I think the culprit was my ecu, but cant verify it because about a week after all that drama I ripped the motor apart to rebuild it. I had shitty low compression. :coy:
