Ok I have a 97 eclipse spyder GST 5spd convertible.
Cooling fans are run direct should I run them back to relay?
It's always had royal purple 10w30 should I stick with it?
And what's the best way to prevent crank walk?

Hey bud:

I'll go in order of what you asked.

1:Either or. As long as you have fans running its fine. Constantly running the fans will burn them out quicker, but not so much so that you would replace them often. If you don't mind listening to them all the time, there is nothing wrong with them running all the time.

2: Royal purple is decent oil. It is fine to run. Sure keep using it. If you do switch just stay synthetic.

3: Pull the engine out and throw it away haha. The problems that cause a walking crank are all internal and are of the design of the engine. Without going inside to rectify the problems it will happen (if it has not already started to happen) You can disconnect your clutch switch so you can start it without pushing the clutch in, but this is more of a psychological fix than anything, hell even automatics crank walk and there is near zero lateral load on the crank. Save up for the 6 bolt swap, or be prepaired to buy a new 7 bolt engine every 75-125K miles.

Hope this helps!

Aaron

It's best to have them hooked up to the relays for proper working condition. Accidents happen when you forget to turn the fans on.

Royal Purple is way over priced. You should update your profile, but a lot of people including myself have huge success with Shell Rotella (yes, the cheap oil) due to it's high zinc content.

122,800 miles on my original motor & tranny. I guess I will keep everyone updated, :toobad:

1. Fans are fine, mine are hardwired & running constantly. I control them thru DsmLite.

2. $20 Shell Rotella oil is baller. Search about it. I run it.

3. Don't abuse your car, keep an eye on things, do preventative maintenance & try to keep your machine tuned. Besides that, crankwalk really isn't that common believe it or not.

1. The first question that comes to mind to why are they wired direct? Is this because it has a problem keeping a steady temperature? Was he trying to band-aid a larger problem? While it shouldn't hurt the fans to be on all the time; I'd look into why this was needed.

2. That's a good oil, but you don't have to run it. I've found that Brad Penn oil works great, and is a little cheaper. However, it is not recommended to use if you still have a catalytic converter due to the higher zinc and phosphorous content.

3. Best way? Maintain your car. This issue was blown completely out of proportion and really is not that big of a deal. I've had three early 7-bolts now (one had 140k, one 112k, and the other 167k) and none have shown any sign of the "dreaded crankwalk". Recently rebuilt the one engine (140k) due to a cylinder head problem.

It's sitting at 176k miles on the dash as for the fans that was something I did and no it wasnt overheating I just didn't like how hot the turbo and manifold got under the carbon fiber hood. The reason I ask about the crankwalk is because everynow and then when I make hard turns it dies and since this is the first vehicle I've ever owned that has a tendency to crank walk I want to avoid it of at all possible

Ok, cool!

Well, the cars that *did* walk were low mileage. I.E. under 100k. The fact you have 170k on the car makes me believe it's another problem. Here's a goofy question for you: how low is the gas level when it stall on turns? Sometimes a car can stall around turns due to low fuel levels and the gas shifting to the other side.

I don't have a logger or dsmlink yet trying to sell my jeep to give me a little wiggle room financially as for fuel level I had around 1/2 a tank this morning n took a hard right at about 40ish mph

Hey bud:

You don't want to hear this. But stalling around corners is one of the signs of crank walk.

So is blinkers flashing to fast, misfiring, knocking, clunking from the rear, loud exhaust, clutch slipping and everything else because its a seven bolt. ZOMG!!!!!!!

Yeah, really. You need to cut it out. If his RPM's drop too low, he could be stalling from that. Geebus.

Anyways: some other ideas:
-Check the battery; the extra strain from the demands of a turn could be dragging the car down.
-Kinda on the same subject... check the P.S. Pump. Perhaps it is causing extra loads on the engine when in a turn.

It was at idle cause I was going to shift after the turn as for the battery it has a yellow top gel battery

Hey bud:
