Well I finally picked up just the motor from the guy that sold me.

Here are some pictures of the intake manifold. He gave me 2!

I think he said the throttle body is ported with a larger intake pipe. It looks MUCH bigger.

WTF is under there?

The engine has brand new bearings, new pistons and rings, new rods and balance shafts removed (the oil pressure mod was not done) and brand new rear and front seals. I might leave the oil pressure high, because high is better than low. The head is also rebuilt. The tranny and transfer case were rebuilt by DogBox and the 3 bolt rear end was rebuilt as well.

My question is there anything you guys would do since the engine is out and easy to work on?

So taking the balance shafts out doesn't throw off the engine at all? I know it makes it smooth but I could care less bout a smooth engine as long as it running right... I'm bout to rebuild a 420a

I don't know much about 7-bolt motors, I was just told to stay away.

I am also not 100% sure how to break in the engine either. Anyone have any recommendations?

Your turbo doesn't think so. Better port that pressure relief valve. ;)

The head is also rebuilt.
Are you sure? It doesn't appear that way the photos.

A rebuilt head is normally cleaner under the valve cover, like this one I rebuilt for a customer last fall:

That's a 2G throttle body elbow. They sell for $10 on eBay, and they're actually 52mm (just over 2") inside diameter to match up the 2G throttle body. That elbow is actually SMALLER at the flange than a 1G's stock throttle body.

A 1G uses 1-7/8" intercooler piping and a 60mm throttle body, which is why the 1G elbow is stepped like it is. A 2G uses 2-1/4" intercooler piping and a 52mm throttle body.

If you take both of those throttle body elbows off and compare their size at the throttle body flange, you'll see the 2G elbow's inside diameter is actually smaller than the 1G's.

As far as break in, many dsmers use the Motoman with great success
Break In Secrets--How To Break In New Motorcycle and Car Engines For More Power
That head looks like its never had an oil change
A reputable shop will clean the head and valvetrain components so well it looks like a brand new cast, at least the one that does mine:p I wish i had some pics
He may have replaced the components such as seals
Was there machine work done on the shortblock, or just a rering and bearings?

I will have to ask about the head of the engine. I believe the head was rebuilt and came from DSM graveyard. I will have to double check again.

I will look for a FAQ on how to port the relief valve.

Ironically, the guy went through about 4 turbos before finally switching back to stock. I have a feeling that the extra oil pressure might have ####ed up the larger turbos (they were 16G, 16G "Big", 20G and I think a Holset)

I might take the head over to get cleaned at my dad's machine shop if they are not busy. From what you said about the throttle body, should I use the stock 1G elbow or is that 2G elbow fine?

Thanks for the link also this engine was sitting for a while so I wouldn't be surprised that the head was dirty. I believe that he checked clearances and nothing really needed machining.

I don't doubt that this guy is lying because I measured the head with a perfectly flat piece of metal (one that machine shops use to check flatness w/ a feeler gauge) and it was completely flat even w/ a light test.

You are correct. Too much pressure will destroy a turbo in 200 miles or less, depending on how hard it's driven and how excessive the pressure is.

You should use an upgraded 2.5" throttle body elbow- either custom build your own or find a deal on one from DeJon or Slowboy Racing.

Thanks, I will order or ask my dad to make me a elbow.

Yeah I figured that was the cause of the turbo dying because he was running it hard w/ high pressure.

I just talked to him and he told me that the head was rebuilt w/ brand new everything. I assume that he didn't bother cleaning out the head or coated everything with engine oil. I checked the underside and the valves and everything are brand new and clean.

Pretty much, it looks like the engine is pretty much a fully rebuilt motor to spec so I pretty happy! I gotta go pick up the oil pump from brooklyn in order to port it.

That's what we did on my buddy's 2G. We picked up a mild steel throttle body flange on eBay for $10. I cut a mandrel elbow that I had here at the shop to fit the proper angle, tacked it while it was on the car, and simply welded around the flange once it was removed. That was two seasons ago, it's still holding strong for so little invested.

I still find it hard to believe that someone would rebuild a head without cleaning ANYTHING. If you look at the pics, not even the valve springs are clean- everything's coated with oil vapor film. Here's another old head / new head example from my girlfriend's Sunfire rebuild last summer:

Regardless, as long as you feel you got a deal on it then the transaction was worthy.

Yeah I only paid $700 for the car. It also comes with another spare engine that only needs a new valve and piston and sooooo many parts.

So far, everything is in spec and looks pretty new. I believe he just dropped in new valvetrain w/o cleaning. I don't feel like pulling everything out, but I might just clean with a rag or take it to a machine shop to clean.

How much would I expect to pay to clean the head? My dad's machine shop is pretty busy this whole week and I don't wanna wait or bother them while they are busy.
