Motor Oil Question

I know there's been a tread about this topic but I couldnt find the exact answer I was looking for. I got a 95 eclipse gsx with well over 100k miles on it. I've always used "regular" oil pretty much 'cause I've always been a cheap ass. But for the sake of trying to help my engine last longer now...would it be safe to switch to snythetic at this point? Also should I switch to 10W40 now (or a different weight)? And I plan on using mobil1 'cause it seems to be the least expensive of the best kinds of oil out there along with an OEM filter.

Yes and No

You can switch. BUT:

I suggest you switch to what you have in mind maybe even a 15w oil since it is an older or higher milage engine.

Another thing is you MIGHT get some leaking from the removal of oil deposits. If you do, you can switch back and maybe even change out some of your gaskets to help it out.

One thing most people do not understand is that, yes, synthetic is better, but there are facts out that it is not the cure all for engine care.

I guess what I am trying to say is that synthetic oil is NOT all it is cracked up to be. It has been hyped up beyond its productivity. It is better than regular oil, but it is only worth about the price diffrence between regular and synth.

My car has 120k on it and I don't think the previous owner used synthetic but I switched with no problems/leaks. I just used 10W30 with an OEM filter. I didn't notice any difference or anything but IMO its worth it to spend the $20 every 3 months for mobil one.

Thanks for the help. Where can I get mobil one for the best price? And does anyone know the OEM oil filter part number?

Walmart has great prices for a huge size of synthetic.

Just go to the Dealership and tell them what you drive. They will give you the right one!

I don't know if they have this everywhere but BJs wholesale club is cheap. Cosco should have it as well.

ya walmart is cheap, also if you are afraid of leaks i heard that you could just mix some regualr and some synthetic and gradually switch to fully synthetic without mixing...like valvoline durablend i think its called...something like a mix like that. i have no clue what the person before me put in their engine but i put in mobil 1 and no leakage

True, but even better is to tell them you have a '91. The 6-bolt filter is bigger but still fits onto the housing just fine. Or use a PureOne filter Model No. PL10193.

thanks for the advice guys. hopefully this will help that ticking sound i hear when my engine is cold.

There's a chance, but not a big one. Lifter tick is a common DSM problem. I've been using synthetic for over a year and still get lifter tick from time to time.

Well, let me tell you my success story:

About 10K ago (92K miles) I decided to switch to sythetic when they were going to flush my engine out (per request) since the previous owner had BLACK oil in the car and less than a quart.

I switched to synthetic, unfortunately it was Quakerstate. In either event I had ZERO leaks or problems with my synthetic oil change. I've since done 3 synthetic oil changes, to Super Tech..then I found out its the same as Quakerstate, now I'm on mobil 1.

I think as long as you switched oil regularly you shouldn't have new leaks popping up on you.
