More goodies for the RX8!

Well, I always knew my rx8 was slow in the straight line. So i got curious what it put down to the rear wheels after being neck and neck with a new civic SI.
Now that the weather is better I brang it to the dyno to put down a pathetic 155hp and 118tq.

I knew something was wrong.
Did a compression test and found super low compression, especially on the rear rotor.
Luckily I have a badass engine warranty - 8 years, 100k miles.

So I talked to the tech and asked him what clutch/flywheel he recommended since we are already in there - it'll save me the chore of pulling the trans sooner then later. I did some quick shopping for the clutch kit, TOB, pilot bearing, flywheel and counter weight to an astonishing $1k.

Price shopped around and this is what I'm going to run.

• OEM Pilot Bearing
• OEM pilot Bearing Seal
• ACT Prolite Flywheel 9.8lbs!
• ACT Counterweight 3.5lbs!
• ACT Street Clutch

Final price around $850WTF


Anyway it should be interesting to gain speed on revs which I already considered quick, the 15-35whp I've been missing, and the 15-25Wtq I've been missing.

I fell ya, Sold my AWD AT and got an 04 Nordic Green Mica RX8 4sp/4port auto... What year is it and how many miles? 04's run out in a few months, 05/06 etc, been reading up(past 6months), and planing on a few upgrades my self. BUT...

Mines and 05 at 66k and yeah its out of factory 5/50 warranty, but like I said they warranty the engine for 8 years/100k miles.
It should be interesting to see what my dyno #s look like with the new engine.


If you're on the market for an rx8, get the history on the vehicle, plugs and coils are the main thing you gotta do every 30k or so and it's a kick in the wallet. Once these misfire a couple times the catalytic converter gets toasted. Deleting the cat - your options are very limited. There is a updated : motor mounts, starter, battery, and there is a MSP-16 flash I'd recommend.

Finishline performance.com has all the TSBs for it too - it was nice to look over right before mine went out of factory warranty

Was it an automatic?
Some dealers are shady, it's only a matter of time for when the renesis blows up.

See I heard rumors that the dyno jet I got on was out of calibration...but a turbo TC put down 275hp and 280tq which is pretty typical of the setup he was running.

I remember when i first bought my rx8, i just had a catback and K&N drop in panel filter. I chirped the tires into 3rd with 4 additional people in the car(**** sat on the rear center console). Now it's like I can barely chirp them into 3rd by myself.

Oh well, new engine should be in next week so I pumped.

Why do you think these rx-8's lose so much power so early? what oils have you guys been running in them?

the earlier rx-7's would probably still be running their original numbers? Without mods or speacial care..

Mazda really pushed the release early. A lot of 04-05s had tons of problems because of this.
A big part was the oil metering pump not supplying sufficient oil to keep things lubricated.
Combine that with shitty coils that go bad and cause misfires - you're more likely to get detonation. Now you have unburnt fuel overheating the cat, so now that has to be replaced.

Running premix in your fuel is always a good idea - and I'll be doing it on my new engine, as well as running the 5-20 weight oil that mazda recommends. There is speculation about running synthetic and it's a huge debate.

The new series 2 has a redesigned oil metering injection system that is supposedly better...but time will tell.

There is many theorys on why and how it fails, but i know some people that have over 120k on there orignal 04/05 engines. But the new 09's do have the 2nd design of the OMP, and havent had any issues "yet" as you said.

yeah, its not so bad, im on the new engine, it has 6k on it when i bought it so not that bad, compression is up in the 8's, so its good, Going to have Mazda do the seafoam treatment that they do as well the cabin filter. I have comming new coils/plugs/wires. as for oil, yeah the synthetic has been yacked about to death, but i'm running 5w30 as 5w20 is a bit thin, depending on where you live, me being in PA thats what he mazda dealers here put in.

But I'm working on picking up an 06 to do some Grand-Am racing next year.
