I was looking at buying a modded GSX. It looks like it was very well taken care of. He put around $15,000 worth of stuff on it. What is the reliability of a modded DSM car vs. an unmodded DSM if the driver does not get on it all the time real hard. If I buy a modded car then it is it going to cost me a lot more to maintain it than an unmodded car? How many miles have you guys gotten out of a modded car? Will it hurt the resale value of the car if I have it a while then decide to sell it later since it will have been driven with mods?

Gonna have to agree with 98spydereuegene and a few others, its all a crapshoot. I've had 3 dsms now, the first and the second i was fixing more then i was driving and they were both stock. The third one, the one i currently own, is on its way to being heavily modded and the lack of issues is pretty surprising.

I think it probably comes down to previous owners more then anything else. My first two were from dsmtrader and i can almost guarnatee weren't taken care of. My current one i built almost 100% from the ground up, so thats probably why its been good to me.

I agree with everyone else. Reliability has to many variables that determine it to make it the main reason for buying the car. I say if you like the car, get it, because reliability is hit and miss anyway. I had a stock (with the exception of rims) 95 talon, that blew up backing out of a parking spot, and only had 80k miles on it, I was the second owner, and had service labor slip the car ever had. On the other hand, I have a 1gb Laser that I've driven for 50k miles now, runs 20psi daily driven, and hasn't had any service but brake pads and spark plugs and oil changes, and has never broken in any way for me. It also has almost 200k miles on it, and still has the stock long block and gasket set.

I know some people will try to get rid of their vehicle if they think something is wrong with it and try to get rid of their problem. I have seen a few GST's pretty cheap, one of them said the engine was rebuilt not long ago but could not produce any receipts. If he could have then I would have bought it.

I bought my 91 TSI modded and the previous owner half assed everything on the car. I ended up spending more on parts to get it to run right than I did for the car.

My buddy bought a modded 90 TSI that was very well maintained and put together. My buddy used this car as a daily 80mile driver, and a weekend beater. This car had i think 150k on it when he bought it. One friday night we met up with local camero guys, spanked their v8's a bit, it ran great all night. We got it home, let it cool down, and shut it off for the night. The next morning he went to get in the car to go grab some lunch and it didnt want to fire. We pulled the spark plugs and cyl. #'s 2 and 4 were covered in oil and metal shards.

It all comes back to the owner. Make sure its well maintained before you buy it.

Good Luck!!

Any modded car that you have will almost always last not as long as a stock car. Especially depending on driving. If youre running high boost and going WOT all the time, then of course the engine will get worn a lot quicker along with other things. If you drive it normal and not dog it all the time then it'll last long like a stock car. Maintenance and driving means everything to the lasting of a car.
