I'm looking into some mods for my 92' plymouth laser turbo AWD. Just bought it unmolested and i'm buying a boost controller, boost gauge, and intake pipe and filter for starters. I was hoping for suggestions of; What type of boost controller, boost gauge, and pipe and filter would be preferably be best and where should i get it? Any suggestions and opinions would be great. Thanks!

Maintenance! do anything that needs to be done, thats the number one problem with our cars, people dont replace stuff when they should.

as far as the stuff, its opinion and price that matters, i suggest

autometer boost guauge- 55$
hallman mbc- 50$
dejon intake pipe-$?$

what are your goals for the car? what kind of budget are you on?

Ebay intake pipe (a pipe is a pipe) - $30-35
Boost gauge off ebay or classifieds - $30 or less
Hallman pro boost controller - $70 used, or ebay boost controller for $10 or less (ebay's kinda hit or miss on these)

Make sure you change your timing belt, water pump, and all that good stuff first.

And exhaust is an awesome upgrade.

Lol, why does everyone suggest a $200 dejon intake??? My ebay intake is the exact same as my friend's injen, which is the exact same as a dejon. Seriously people, it's a piece of metal, you're paying for a name. If you're into looking cool in front of other enthusiasts then go for it, but if you'd rather spend that money in other areas of performance get an ebay intake.

Alright thanks guys. I'm going to get a Hallman Pro Evolution Series BC and go with the Autometer Phantom Series Gauges. For intake i'm probly going to get an ebay one if i can find it. I already have my new timing belt, water pump and what else should i do maintnence on?

I think the FP intake is by far the nicest, plus it's huge, so you should gain a little power if you're really pushing your setup. The FP is also far cheaper than many others.

I went with a K&N 4.5" filter with maf adapter from extremepsi. Coupled it with an eBay intake pipe and I was so happy! First mod on an untouched 2g. Pipe is inexpensive so when you decide to upgrade your turbo then you can go with a FP intake pipe. I got a hallman pro mbc for 80 bucks shipped brand new. Fast track has them on sale right now. Hit them up for that. I would go with ProSport gauges. Saves money and gets mostly good reviews. I will be getting all my gauges from them.

Like the others have said, get your car a full tune up/inspection, boost leak test, and compression test. If your compession is low, you are kinda screwed. Highly frowned upon to mod a car with low compession test results.

Have fun my man.

Guess it depends on his goals, even so I would think that the power difference would be VERY minimal, maybe 2hp, and even then like you said, he'd have to be pushing his setup to even see that.

So you think there's a worthwhile gain going to an aftermarket intake that's about stock size, yet no real difference going up from that to a 4"? Can't say I agree with that.

Yeah I guess that's what I'm saying. I personally didn't notice much a difference going from the stock rubber intake to a hard pipe, but maybe that's because I'm still on a 14b.

Now I could see how a bigger intake would help out more with a borg warner or garret or something like that. Like I said I think it would depend more on other things than the intake itself. You've been around dsm's and cars for that matter a lot longer than me though and have a lot more experience, so I'm not saying you're wrong, it's just what I thought to be true.

id get the boost gauge, filter adapter, and start with the exhaust first. you will see a couple extra pounds of boost if you open up the exhaust side, even without a mbc. plus you can try and up the boost with a mbc but it will be like pushing rossie odonel through a straw.

Look in the vendor announcement part of the forums. Slowboy Racing (prostreetdsmx1) and Fast Track Auto (nikkeebabee) are both selling some stuff cheap. Support our vendors and get a great deal on your parts.

Maintenance first
Get a logger (palm/mmcd or evoscan)
Do some research on what the sensors are supposed to tell you and read about tuning and get a decent foundation on these.
Then begin to mod which i would start with removing intake can and turboback exhaust(tbe)
There are good upgrade paths on this site as well as many other dsm vendors have good ones
also www.vfaq.com (you'll need it, plus a lot of free/cheap mods)

Do not:
Go buy a boost controller/gauge and crank it up to 20psi
FYI: NXS motorsports makes a nice boost controller for $20 and i think they still give this site's members a discount
There's a lot of positive feedback from members of the site about it as well as my personal satisfaction with it

Alright, well i got the water pump and the fuel filter and timing belt. Then i'm going to get the rest of the belts replaced and then replace some wearing hoses. Then i'm swapping my turbo (Still a 14b) and throwing on the Air Filter on the stock rubber piping for now till i get more money as it's just a stock 14b turbo. (If i upgrade turbo i will get intake pipe). Then i'm installing the boost controller, boost gauge and a old school pop off valve. The exhaust is already 2.5'' straight piped to a stock muffler so i'm going to get a nice muffler with a 3'' or 4'' tip. Is this good and on the right path?

Have fun with that fuel filter ROFL. That was the most PITA thing to get off of my car.

When you say pop-off valve, you are talking about the blow-off/compressor bypass valve correct?

If so, you should just keep the stock 1G BOV. It's been proven to be one of the best and most cost effective BOVs for our cars. And remember: KEEP IT RECIRCULATED. :talon:

LOL really? what all made it difficult. what's the process of changing the filter?

And for the BOV. Yeah that's what it is. But i have a guilty pleasure of the "PSHHHHHHH" sound of the BOV. Any way i can get my 1g bov to be louder. and it's still recirculated yes.

Well everything is cut out and it's just straight piped to a stock muffler. the piping is 2.5" and i'm thinking of getting an apexi N1 high flow 3'' downpipe and putting on a good muffler with a 3'' or 4'' tip. After time i will finish the exhaust by adding the full apexi N1 exhaust.
