MLS Head Gasket

i was told i should use it because i did not resurface the block. I did get the head resurfaced though so im not worried about that they took 4000ths off of it. I cleaned up the block with a 3m pad.



You were told wrong,when using a MLS head gasket, the block also has to be resurfaced for a tight seal,when using a composite head gasket,there is no need to get the block resurfaced just the head:cool:
 
I checked the block for straight ness with a straight edge and it looked pretty flat, But i was thinking about spraying the block and letting it sit before installing so i could make shure that it fills in any little inperfections.
 
Hey everyone, I just picked up a felpro MLS head gasket. Does any one know if i should spray it with copper spray or just put it in as it comes?

As you'll see, this topic is a point of contention among enthusiasts. Personally, I recommend using the new MLS gasket without any copper gasket spray. You can verify that the block is flat with a straight edge. If it's not, get it decked.

I have a .40 over (87.5mm) bore 2.4 stroker. I use a power enterprize head gasket. They make one of the nicest gaskets out there. If your stroker is a 2.0 to a 2.3 with .40 over your bore will be 86.5 i believe. Cometic makes a head gasket all the way up to a 87mm gasket. Make sure the gasket doesn't over lap the cylinder walls. bigger is ok but smaller is a bad idea fyi. Good luck man!

I really only wanted to go .030, but I couldn't find any stroker pistons at that size.

EDIT:

Of course NOW I find some from Ross that are .030" over...which according to Extreme PSI is 85.75mm. These are a slightly higher comp ratio (9.0 vs. 8.8), but I think I can live with that.

I don't think the machine shop has started my block yet, so I may try to get the .040 Wiesco's that I took to them back, and trade them in for the Ross .030's. And then go for a 86mm HG.

I am running a cometic 87 mm bore gasket on my 0.040" overbored 4G64. I love it. Althought it is 0.5 mm smaller there are no problems. BTW, the 0.030" over pistons that are 85.75mm are 2.0L pistons.
 
Man, witha 6bolt, you have very large diamter head studs anyway. I would run a composite for anything less than 650whp. Properly torque the 6bolt head bolts and go knowing that if you lift the head, you won't need to spend the money resurfacing the head. I understand if you want to do it once and be done with it. If that's the case then get some 6bolt l19s (OMG more than anyone ever needs) and an MLS. The block will explode before the head lifts.
 
Looks like I'm stuck with the 040" over Weiscos (Extreme PSI won't exchange them - it's well past 30 days).

The machine shop is already gonna surface the deck/head to well within specks for an MLS, and I've already got the ARP head studs.

So... MLS or composite, and where do I find one for .040" over? (I found a 86mm cometic that should work... I believe .040 over is 85.75mm)
 
I don't know if anyone told you this but if you do a headgasket and valve job on a old engine, there is a good chance that you'll get excess blow thru the piston rings.

Its like this, the car parts have worn evenly up to now so stuff has stayed in balance though worn. A new valve job and headgasket create more compression and vacuum in the cylinders. the only loose fit is the piston rings. Simply put, you might burn a lot more oil than you started from even though you fixed two things.

Id rebuild the whole engine at that stage.
