Based on your posts, it seems that you are paying attention to details and are pretty thorough. I would suggest that you read up a bit on compression and leak-down testing, and do it yourself. It's really easy, can save you a lot of $$$, and I think you are perfectly capable of it.

As for your question, it sounds like it could be...but without more details and actually being there to see it, I wouldn't want to guess. The results of the compression and leak-down test will probably tell you for sure, unless it's just a really strange problem.

Either way, stay away from that shop you mentioned :)
 
ill look into a leak down test then. i live in an apartment and I have nowhere covered to work on the car, and it rains every day here. Otherwise I would do it myself. How much should a leakdown test cost at a shop?

I really don't know. I'm guessing most shops have a 1/2 hour minimum (if not 1 hour), and it should take maybe 1/2 hour to do it at the most. At $75/hour or so...well there ya go :)

Still no excuse to not at least spend $10 and do your own compression test in between rain clouds though ;)
