misting the intercooler with co2

would just use it for shits and giggles, not looking for any real 400awhp help from this LOL, but realistically would this actually help cool the intercooler from heat soaking slightly?

my favorite part... push button activation switch Lol, throw some insight into this mix please.:aha:
 
CO2 is gets very cold coming out of a pressurized bottle. Not quite sure why water is there, possibly to help "absorb" the cold from CO2 and keep the intercooler colder longer.

Just for the fun of it, get a thermometer and put it into the outlet of the intercooler. Note it's reading during idle after warmup. Then take a CO2 fire extinguisher and blast the IC with it. Keep an eye on the thermometer, you should see temperature drop. Now spray some water on the IC and blast it again to see if the temp went lower and stayed there longer.

also, where the hell does CO2 come from if its just a water mister?:hmm:

would it actually be worth it though? or is it a joke for super newbs.
 
In theory it will (colder air=more power, basically) but i have no personal experience with it.
What you can do for now is get a garden sprayer and run a line from it to a spray nozzle in front of the IC. Put some ice in the sprayer, full it with water about half way, pump it up, and go for a cruise while a friend keeps pumping it to keep water spraying onto the IC. If you see considerable difference, proceed with fancier stuff like CO2. At least the "garden sprayer" idea will give you a really cheap way to experiment (CO2 extinguishers are pretty costly).
 
I know a guy who rigged up a hose with some holes in it that he ran down in front of the IC and the other end was attached to a can of that compressed air that people use to dust computers with and he would hold it upside down and spray it on the IC from inside the car. He ran low/mid 13's on a high mileage 7 bolt with 14b/stock ic at 3500 feet.
 
thanks I just might try that since we are starting to come up on some hot days, and my boosted car feels like a fat ten year old girl riding a bike up a hill slow as hell when its hot.
I was looking at those prices, outrageous LOL. Almost would be better to get a meth kit with a spray nozzle a few inches from the TB with a tune for it huh?

I assume nobody here whom has posted plays paintball... sure a fire extinguisher is large and may last a few sprays... but for a couple runs a 20oz co2 tank is like $15-$20 and costs $2-$3 to fill... hell, buy 3 or 4 and link em up.

I dont see how it wouldnt cool things down considering liquid co2 shot through a paintball gun will freeze it up in the middle of summer... let alone a straight dump on an intercooler from the tank.

That being said, I haven't heard of such a spray system for an intercooler... but I do know about co2 and the fact it will frost up in 100* heat.

Ive personally (way back in the day) had a tank get so cold and frosty it froze and stuck to my glove on my hand.... I was able to deglove myself with my glove frozen attached to the tank trying to take it off.... this was after an o ring failure and the tank dumped from almost a full fill.................. its cold as, well.... fudge. In the pg forum world.
 
you have no idea LOL, my friend thought meth was direct plug and go..... so without a tune or anything he installed, running a 16g and he fuel cut around 14psi so he set the meth to kick in around 14 and he ran it all the way to 22psi, constantly running to auto store and grabbing WINDSHIELD WIPER fluid LOL. needless to say he blew that motor up.

so basically if I want something like that might as well make a custom water mister with freezing water OR methanol, what about just misting the intercooler with windshield fluid has like 67% methanol? and a trigger routed to the cabin...

Best buy a good intercooler instead of wasting money. Extreme turbo systems location is in vacouver washington. If you go in they will cut you a deal on the price. Better spend money on a good intercooler then a water pisser. On a side note the vrsf fmic is good enough and half the price only costing $300.
 
Does spraying water on an intercooler help? Yes. STI's came with them stock with a little tank in the trunk. But mostly because they didn't package a big intercooler, and right on top of the engine has some heatsoak issues. Air to Air are pretty efficient already if its sized correctly, the only downside being that you can only lower the temperature to near whatever ambient temperature is. So cold c02 would help, but could you use enough of it to make a difference? Give it a shot and let us know how it works. Cry02 has been pitching that for years.

IAT is one of the biggest contributors to knock or preignition. So cooling the air helps. Water/Meth injection is also a very good way to lower IAT. The conversion of water to steam sucks a ludicrous amount of heat out of the air (see latent heat of vaporization). The downside is it's another system to look after. Most people tune without it and than use it only when they need the extra cooling when they start knocking. Air to Air intercoolers are about as low maintenance as it gets. Pressure wash the bugs off every once and awhile and don't smack it off the ground all the time.

yep, what he said. co2 will get into the engine bay garenteed, then the co2 removes oxygen from the bay, and if the air filter pipe inhales co2 over spray directly then your most definatley gonna LOOSE power. forget co2, use water/meth on the intercooler spray, hell, use nitrous, that way the nitrous over spray gettin into your bay will really spice things up in there :)
 
Honestly some aero work to the front end would probably serve you just as well to make sure you're getting efficient flow through the intercooler. Making sure all the air that doesn't go over your car goes through the I/C. And a huuuuuuuuuge splitter :hellyeah:
 
Accually if u mix water and alcohol 50/50, and then spray it over the intercooler it will instantly lower IAT's. Put water on your finger and blow on it and see how cold It gets, then put alcohol on your finger and do the same thing... The alcohol will get much colder when air travels across it and will evaporate a lot faster than water.

I know a guy that made this setup for about $40 at the local parts store with windshield washer nozzles, an external mount windshield washer pump (that you will have to replace from time to time due to alcohol hurting the internals of the pump, but they're cheap), a push button switch, clear rubber tubing, and a radiator overflow tank. He then directed the nozzles in front of each side of his FMIC and could see roughly a 30 horse gain when he pushed his button inside the car!!!! :thumb:

that seems like it would be a cool little trick to have.
 
Kinda like how I mentioned you can make an ic sprayer in post #1.

I made one out of my old windsheild washer bottle and pump, got 2 nozzles to spray onto the ic.
I made my inlet tube big enough to put regular ice cubes from the freezer in.Baller status boyz.

yeah it doesn't usually get to hot where I'm at but during the summer it does, rest of the time it's usually like 39-60 degrees.

I would probably just customize a nozzle tip spraying directly onto the IC itself also consist it of what 50/50 mix? water/alcohol and not into the IC piping.
 
Correct, you do not want it to mix with your intake charge. You just want to do like What bud92gsx did. Which all the water/alcohol mixture does is super cool the intercooler core Itself, thus maximizing It's performance and also preventing heat soak on Long runs. This way it won't mess with your a/f ratio near as much as directing it Into the system like water/meth :thumb:
