Car : 1992 Plymouth Laser 1.8 Liter

Symptoms : Misfiring. For about a year it has always ran really rough when first started after it hasn't been ran for 24 hours or so. Sounds like a lawnmower. I used to be able to give it gas up to about 2000-2500 rpm and wait about 30 seconds and it would slowly start popping less and less before it would smooth out and the rpm's would increase. Like magic. :)

Recently I reinstalled my air conditioner pulley and topped it off with Freon. The best I can tell the car started getting consistenly worse after this. Now when you first start the car it doesn't start easy and misfires heavily once it does start. Driving the car while in this state causes small backfires through the intake.

The odd thing is that it still smooths out after driving it for several minutes. Even after it smooths out though it still misfires while cruising at a set speed. If the gas pedal is put down to accelerate the misfiring stops until you go back to maintaining a speed.

What I've Checked / Replaced :

Checked the spark plugs (Under 2 years old). They're all perfect. (I have a grain dryer transformer that runs at about 50,000 volts. Put that on a spark plug and you'll know right away if it's bad. It also works great at cleaning plugs. ;) )

Checked the spark plug wires (Under 2 years old). My test was the simplest of them all by simply looking in the engine bay when it's pitch black out and looking for the lightning show. So I suppose this could still be the culprit possibly.

Checked the Cap/rotor (Under 2 years old.). Rotor was in perfect condition. Cap showed signs of arcing so it was replaced yesterday. This helped but on a very small level. The problem persists.

Checked connections for the MAF sensor, ISC, TPS, ISCMPS, etc

ERROR CODES: Sometimes the car will show these error codes recently.

Volume Air Flow Sensor
Vehicle Speed Sensor

I'd like to get some idea what the problem is before I start buying parts. I've done that in the past. Spend $150 to fix a free problem, etc.

Thanks for any help provided. I'll fill in any blank spots I left as needed.
