hey guys i just found this add on craiglist and it looks decent enough for the price

i dont have a decent income, but i was thinking this might be a decent choice for my dd if i can get it running, then hopefully building it up slowly.

1990 Eagle Talon Tsi awd

he says theres an mechanical sound coming from it and he thinks its the balance shaft bearing are going out. Is this an easy fix? or do you think getting the car back on its feet is gona be pricey?


Im thinking it could be a quick fix and the car will be drivable, but i could be wrong.

well man to be honest. your gonna have to do tear down just to find out for sure. while your in there do maintenance like none other. 194,000 miles is alot and since your gonna have to tear it apart might as well do the stuff for piece of mind. all timing components, head gasket, maybe send the head out to have it looked over and redone. now it might be something really simple making noise then again it might be the balance shaft bearings and in that case you might as well remove the balance shaft. at 500 for the car and wouldn't even worry about the aftermarket parts i would say it's worth it if you have the time and money to do the rebuild along with a dd until it's done. is does seem like a good car and would make a nice daily driver. from the picture anyway. but with all the work that would possibly need to be done, and what should be done it could get kind of pricey. don't know how your financial status is but if you got it then do it. My .02.

and since it comes with a spare block, crank, etc. you could just build that motor and drop it in. and then pull the other one apart and see whats wrong with it.

Don't do it man.. if your looking for a dd thats not for you..

Bad bearing = Bad news.

Keep looking man. Plenty of nice dsms out there that don't have a bearing going.

Don't do it unless you WANT to rebuild the motor. At almost 200k it's time to pull the motor have it sent out and bored and so on and so forth. If you can get him to sell the the spare block and engine parts with it for the $500 and you want a project it might be worth it. If I'm not mistaken that "japanese selectable" transmission is automatic too so make sure you know what you are getting into.

If the balance shaft bearings seize the valves and pistons will "interfere" with each other. Read a full rebuild will be reqired $$$.

At 183,000 miles the balance shaft bearings on my Talon were worn to approaching failure.

Twenty year old DSMs can be fun cars but not a good DD for someone on a limited income.

I think you might be wrong at that mileage. Don't buy it unless you've got money to replace that engine with a "fresh one" and even if you do replace it make sure you check the timeing belt closely, this the 4g63t's weak link

yea thats exactly what i was thinking to, this would fit in the lines of a project car, ill see what i can do, for 500 with the spare block and parts should be a decent deal. but most likely ima pass on it

well heres the response i got from him

"The talon was parked about 5 days ago because I believe the balance shaft bearings are sticking and slowing the motor down..it dies everytime I would stop at a stop sign or signal. It could be something else..maybe an Idler pulley for the timing belt or something simple like that I just don't have time to work on it. I pretty much have the whole bottom end for the spare motor. I bought the parts car from a guy that had it as his daily driver and it had an engine fire..but he said it was running fine when it caught on fire. The parts car had 163,276 miles on it..so thats how many miles are on the motor. The motor was never rebuilt so the block has a few rebuilds left on it. The talon is complete some interior plastics are out right now but I do have them..it has no head liner. Other than that it is complete, the motor also has an oil leak at the crankshaft where the inner and outer seal are on the oil pump. I was gonna fix that when I put in a balance shaft eliminator kit. But I never picked the kit up. The car is at my brothers right now so I can't get any more pictures of it today. I'll put a few more pics up on the craigslist listing tomorrow. The lowest price I would take just for the car is $450. I would take another $200 for the other bottom end parts, and an extra $450 for all the aftermarket parts I have. So if you wanted everything I would take $1,000 even for all of it..that's after knocking off $100 if you wanted everything...and you would have a lot of parts to start your project with. The car would also come with the transfer case and driveshaft. The whole driveshaft was rebuilt about 100 miles before I pulled it off and welded up the center differential in the tranny. Driveshaft would have to be balanced though..it used to vibrate at about 30 mph. If you have a cell phone I can text pics to I can send pictures of all the aftermarket parts and more pics of the car and motor parts. Just email your cell # if you want me to do that. for 450 for just the car, then i would have to get the motor rebuild with stock rods and pistons.

usually how much does it cost for a motor rebuild? i would just get stock 6 bolt rods and pistons to keep the price as low as possible. if i can get an average cost of how much its gona be for rebuilding the motor then it could be possible for me to pick it up
