Megan Racing Coilover's for 1g's

Me.

My 1g is a street car/back-up track car. I have JIC's on my 2g so I should be able to give a reasonable comparison.

FWIW my friend has Apex'i coilovers on his EVO and they are made by the same manufacturer as the Megan's. They are exactly the same except for the stickers on them. I have seen him on the track countless times and the coilovers work well. So I expect good things from them on my 1g.

These look promising. I've had great products from MR before, so I'm hoping these don't disappoint. I'll be sticking with the tried-and-true spring and shock setup for the time being, but once I advance to the coilover point, I'll be giving these a try.

SPring rates sound great, my only oncern is in the shock absorbers. As we all know there is a big difference between adjustable shocks such as AGX's, KYB's, and Penske's.

^^^ You talkin to me?ROFL ROFL ^^^

If so, no worries, Kyle. I guess I failed to mention in the post, and in the thread I started, that the question is relating to a set of real full race coilover struts, not just stiffer springs for my already overtaxed AGX's. If that was for someone else, I'll shut up now.

Well my point was that I was hoping that the shocks that come with the megan coilovers are decent. I've seen many coil over setups where the shocks ruin everything. Hopefully this isn't a good set of spring rates and camber plates, bolted to something that's no better than agx's. If so I'll stick with mine, add some GC's and camber plates and call it a day since I can't afford a more expensive setup.

Any update Evan?

I will add the pics that I uploaded once they get approved

Finally got a chance to throw the coilovers on the car tonight. Here are some pics of the Megan's vs. the stock springs with Monroe Sens-a-trac's (ROFL )

Rear:

Front:

The obvious issues:

The rears have no provision for supporting the flexible brake line. I used a zip tie to snug it to the shock body.

The front brake line support does not allow you to bolt the brake line up without bending the hard line and bracket that bolts to the body. Not surprising given that the coilovers are thicker bodied than the stock replacement strut. I haven't messed with the modifying since it was getting to cold outside to continue. Looks simple enough. Just would have been nice not to have to fool with it. I couldn't really drive it as floppy brake lines next to moving wheels make me nervous. I backed it down the driveway and then back up to settle the suspension. I will take pics later when I have more light. Everything was put on as it came out of the box from Megan.

The brake rotor picture shows the difference between the 1g small rotors and the old AEM BBK (now Powerslot BBK) I have left over fro my 2g track car. Since I had to modify the mid hard line on the front to clear the fatter body of the Megans I used this as a chance to switch in the braided lines I have had sitting around for a few months. The two piston 2g GSX calipers I had from my 2g use a banjo fitting on the front whereas the 1g two piston calipers use a line that threads into the body. I ordered a set of conversion lines from Honda Robert @ RRE. The set is a standard 1g kit that RRE sells plus the addition of a conversion lower line from the mid hard line to the caliper that have the appropriate banjo fitting to attach to the 2g caliper. Since I was going to have to change the lower line in the future anyways I just went ahead and started the install of the BBK.

As I said in the first line of the above post, I uploaded the pics to my gallery and am waiting for them to be approved so that I can link to them.

Oops, sorry. I was a lil lazy. I saw the word pics, but didn't see the pics, LOL... :coy:

EvanK I'm trying to decide if i want to make the leap to JIC's, I just can't justify spending the money yet. The megans seam decent and are more in my price range. I'm sure you haven't had the chance to tweak these much but I would like to know how they compare to your 2g JIC setup? Whatever info you could give would be great. Thanks.

I have a hard time finding time to work on my car as I work 7 days a week.

My initial impression of the Megan's straight out the box was not great. Before you think I am condemning them I AM NOT. The quality seems good but the settings are way off.

Out of the box they were set to 25 of 32. 32 being the stiffest. Dropping them down to 5 helped but the fronts are set too low out of the box. They would compress then "jump up" on rebound. At 10kg and 12kg there is a lot of spring to contend with.

I think I will get good things from them once I find the sweet spot on the settings. It's just going to take awhile for me.

thanks for sharing a great review Evan. You are 100% correct that they don't come set too great out of the box, usually no corners match but most people getting coilovers understand that it takes some time and trial and error to dial them in to fit your needs.

I have people walk into the shop complaining about coilovers they installed and after my suspension scientists in the back have at them they all leave with huge smiles.

take the time to really configure these coilovers to fit your needs and you will see how great of a product it really is.

If you need help setting them up feel free to let me know.
