Mega Squirt standalone

Anyone running megasquirt stand alone ? If so how hard or easy is it to tune with ? I'm trying to decide between this and dsmlink.

I ran it on my boosted 420a, It is a pretty good standalone with lots of support on the MS fourms. I know there are a few 4g63 guys running it with success. I liked it very much and for the price it is tuff to beat! The hardest part for me was getting the car to start after that is tuned very well. If you dont know much about fuel trims and timing it could be tuff. I am thinking about tring it on my 1g but there are so many other options out there that are far easier that will get me to my power goals.

I told people my goals aren't really that high, but for a cheaper price than dsmlink and it being a full stand alone. I'd like to get it. Does it hook up to a laptop. Could someone that has skill in tuning a Aem Standalone tune with the Ms pretty easy ?

Dsmlink has more feature's than megasquirt. Do some more research on both and you'll be able to see the differences for yourself.

Looks like Megasquirt is cheaper, It's also a full standalone would it not have more control.

Everybody here is going to be biased toward Dsmlink, that's why I suggested you research it yourself. Get the facts and make the decision based on what you learn.

thats fine i have no problem hearing all the perks of dsmlink and how people like it because its one of my options and if alot of people like it and it to be a great tuning tool then why not get it. I'd also just like to hear from the fewer people that run the other what they think. Biased or not i'd love to hear everyones opinion

From checking out Megasquirts site it looks very confusing and hard to tune with.

I'm thinking you made a good choice going with DSMLink. I've personally built and tuned two MS setups, one was an air-cooled VW 1600cc baja rail, the other was a '70 Chevy Malibu/Chevelle SuperSport clone. In both cases the setups were very simplified, leaving out a lot of what a road-going car would use [only sensors were a TPS, WBO2, GM 3-Bar MAF, and two temp sensors]. I still find difficulty modifying the MS maps, although I chalk it up to still being fresh with the systems.

DSMLink's datalogging is a definite perk, I'm very temped to use it in the future, even though I"m looking at a modest 300awhp from my GSX A/T.

yea I'm looking for 350ish whp don't know how far the 17c is going to take me, then just get some other stuff done like suspension. My friend is running this with his 60-1 and he loves it. I figure i'll be happy with it. I just don't like waiting I'm hoping it'll be here tomorow or friday and i can get it put in this weekend with luck.

I noticed that you run a gm maf. Don't forget to also purchase a WBO2 or a GM3BAR sensor. One of these or both of these will help you out emensly when compensating for the gm maf. Just a little something to look into if you haven't already.

I am sure you will be happy with DSMlink. I run MS for two main reasons. Price, and I enjoy tweaking around with things and learning about things that many people have to interest in.

Link is definitely the easier to use option, plug and play and get down to tuning. MS is much more involved and requires alot of time to install and use.

I would def enjoy learning something new and fiddling around with it, but for a dd i just don't have the down time. I need something that is easy for me to pick up on and tune with. I want on the road and i wanna rape all the cars that i couldn't before do to knock!
Dsmlink should be in this weekend I can't wait.
I'm also pretty new to messing around with cars. Unfortunately I had a camry from 15 yrs old til a month or two before i was 18. I think I've learned some, but have a long way to go. I'm only 19years old now. Thanks to everyone for their help.

Aside from the setup and initial setting tuning on the m.s. is extremely simple. I run it on my car and love it. I will never look back to a Maf senor or stock ecu again.

Having worked with both, the link is easier. To oversimplify it a little, with DSMLink you tell it where you would like to be. While with MSnS you need to direct it to get there.

Also the install is obviously easier. Pretty much plug right in (dependant on the clutch mod).

I think that after you get used to the tables on m.s. they are really easy. I will agree DSM link is easier but to say it has more features is a pretty ignorant statement.

I wholeheartedly agree, comparing the two is totally apples to oranges. You simply can't compare a piggyback to a full standalone solution like the megasquirt. Well, actually I suppose you can but to say that the DSMlink has more "features" is outright misinformation. In fact MS has TONS more features and is infinitely configurable! It's a complete standalone for goddsake . That's like saying the DSMlink has more "features" than an AEM

Agreed. I don't understand all of the setup features or board mods and probably never will, but I enjoy every part of tuning it and I love the way my car runs with it installed.

Agreed. But I'm thinking that he meant the user friendly features that come with DSMLink, not necessarilly the adjustability features (at least that's the way I read it). The adjustability features, after the learning curve, are pretty substantial for MSnS.

AFAIK there is no plug and play harness. There is a harness you can buy from diyautotune.com which plugs into the m.s. and then you wire it to your factory harness. You will have to cut the pig tail off of your coolant temp sensor and put in the g.m. one and you will also need to run the map sensor vac line and 2 wires for your intake air temp sensor. One solution is to take an old broke ecu and then cut off the clip part on the bottom. Wire the m.s. to which pins you want and then plug the factory harness in that way.
