Media blasting exterior cost?

Any one that had their car media blasted everywhere except inside please post how much it cost. Trying to get an idea for the price, I've heard anywhere from $500 to $1500.

Just out of curiosity, why would you want to do this?

Call up shops that have powdercoating services (Bonehead Performance, JNZ) and see if they could do it. They probably can't give you a great estimate, but maybe a ballpark figure.

I want a new paint job and this is a best way to remove paint, rust, and anything else that's on the car. I'm also in the middle of making some patch panels where inner fender have rusted through and I'm starting to think clean body shell would be ideal for continuing this work.

Media blasting work-hardens the sheet metal, and very often leads to distortion. The best way to get the paint off is simply sanding. If paint removers are used, pick one manufacturer and use all of their metal conditioning products in the order and methods prescribed by the maker.

Look into soda blasting. There is a mobile service here in Phoenix that comes to your location and charges $100 per hour. For my Corvair with 2 layers of paint to remove I was quoted between 4-5 hours. The nice thing about soda blasting is that is doesn't distort or affect the metal like glassbead or sand, it won't affect glass or chrome (if you accidently blast some) and the leftover residue can be washed away safely down and drain with water. I plan to have it done in the parking lot here at work on a Saturday and just wash down the lot when I'm done.

There's a place about 45 minutes from me that has a car-sized cabinet. I was quoted $30/hr to use it by myself, or $40/hr for me and one other person. The guy on the phone said they would set me up with the right media and pressure to make sure the sheet metal doesn't distort. He said to do an entire 1G (inter, exterior, engine bay) would probably take 2 people 4-6 hours (I guess we'd be done in 4 hours max).

I never ended up going because I couldn't borrow a truck and trailer in time. So, plan B kicked in: 1 gallon of aircraft stripper. It's tedious, but so far, so good.

You're incorrect. If you use the wrong media and/or do it incorrectly, yes it can damage it.

I have read about it. Is it strong enough for rust though? I was under impression it's good for stripping paint and cleaning and not damaging trim and such.

Unless the entire car is a rusty hulk I would do the main blasting with soda and then do the rusty areas with more traditional media like aluminum oxide.

Nah I was always just told to not cut corners and use the cheap sh*t.The main part of painting and body work is prepping is knowing the outcome of the paint job before you even start it.As i stated use etching primer(The correct material for bare metal applications )
It is a primer and a etcher in one that is phosphoric acid and eats into the metal.Sound familiar.Its for bare metal applications witch someone said they are doing.hmm i wonder who.....And some type of Prep Solvent witch ever you prefer to prep with after.Pretty simple concept.You gotta be a idiot if your going to take it down to bare metal and spend all that money and not do it the correct way.But its your money and not my car so i don't give a sh*t what you do.If i wasn't in such a good mood i would of just said i hope your paint chips off your car while your driving down the road someday
