Max hp on a stock automatic tranny

Okay, YES i searched. Whats the max hp a stock automatic tranny can hold? I have a stage 3 shift kit and thats about it. I want this tranny to be able to handle 300-400awhp. So what exactly do i need to make this tranny to support it.

Well, it all boils down to how much money you intend to part with. Stock horsepower was around 180 or so. Doubling that will for sure shorten the life of the trans. There is a list of things you need to do to make it reliable. Reliability is the key operative. Any corner you cut will cut the life of the trans. Have a reputable transmission shop build it for you. Be prepared for a pretty good expense.

But you know it is done right and you should have some kind of warranty. Depends on the shop and the modifications.

Okay well i ain't gonig to be racing this stuff all the time. Just wondering what i need to support around 300awhp and how much hp the stock ones can handle. What should i add torque converter, gears etc.?

stage 3 shift kit? (who makes) didnt kno there was stages thats all. upgrade the tranny cooler and that will help you last alot longer. i know a friend pushin over 300whp with just that and a tranny temp gauge.

tq converter would help out if you were running a bigger turbo.


end clutch, tranny rebuild from IPT would help also

Not sure if you've seen it or how useful it will be to you, but there is a bit of info on auto tranny on this site. I remember seeing it there, but haven't really looked at it much.

So what would you recommend, i'm looking to push 350-400hp but obviously not abusing it all the time... i only take it to the track once in awhile. I think first off cooler will be first thing but i'm not to sure of the install probably need to find a buddy who knows trannys to help me out. Is it worth swaping to manual or keep the automatic and just upgrade the automatic?

Tranny rebuild kit to be safe

check out IPT email them with your goal and see what they say also. either have them build it (and pay for there work) or get the parts needed from them and install yourself
high stall Tq-converter (theres a guy on here that knows a good place to get 'em besides IPT)

Nice how is that handling ? Just need something that will handle 350- 400 awhp. Also is it hard working on the auto trannies because i do engine stuff but really never messed around with the tranny. Or the the labour is fairly straight forward?

Our own shop car has run a mild 11.3. Several of our users are running 10s, the fastest of which is Russ Coxe running 9.7 with traps over 140 mph! Considering the fact he's doing this through a factory automatic transmission really illustrates the power he's putting down.

what about on the 1g manual tranny, I know it says dsms can handle 400 hp but does that include tranny also? I mean as for everyday driving as well, not just handle it for two laps at the track....
( I goal for 350whp so will this be feasable with stock 1g tranny just with upgraded clutch and flywheel... ) I really dont have the money for a high performance tranny because all the ones Ive seen have been over 1k...

Yea same here i don't have the money for high performance trany but can't the stock tranny hold 400 just like the engine? Like daily driven, not stupidly driven or track driven Or do i need to get a cooler, end clutch, shift kit etc?

i have a manual 1g tranny with a really grindey 2nd gear....

cooler will help the tranny last longer keeping temps down! shift kit(self explanitory i would think) better shifts, end clutches are good to replace they do go bad if you beat on your tranny. tq converter i would say only would be needed if you upgrade turbos and go huge. i know 2g evoIII 16g builds nicely on stock converter.

Are these products hard to install such as the cooler, shift kit, end clutch, tq converter etc. Or should i get someone who knows transmissions?

cooler is pretty simple, shift kit is going to be a pain if its your first time. i had help installing mine and after it was done didnt look so bad, actually easy to get to the valve body just gotta be extremely careful.

end clutch/tq converter i have no idea havent done those YET..
