I have an auto and I was just wondering if it was bad to start in low and push it to second then drive and if it even helps

i think you should leave the car in park when you start it , i shifted mine and its got 127k miles on it and has no tranny problems.

He mean to be able to control what rpm he is shifting at by selecting gears in an auto. Ive wondered this aswell. Dont have an auto to try it in tho.

I did it once back when I had my 93 accord LX. It was fine when I did it a couple of times, but I think 3 months later you could smell something when I did it. Smelled like a burning clutch, but obviously it wasn't that. So I stopped doing it. But in an owners manual I read awhile back for an auto, it said it was good to do this every now and then. I doubt they meant while you're racing though:p

I have a little beater isuzu Imark 3spd that is not exactly fun to drive. You can select 1st 2nd and Drive on the auto shifter, was wondering if it would be really bad for the tranny if I shifted it manually going 1st second Drive like this? I don't really know anything about autos because this is the only one Ive ever had.

actully... i cant spell this morning so forgive me
but, in cetain situations i do believe shifting an auto car
i do it alot, i raced a 03 civic hatch 2 times 1 not shifting
1 shifting. i beat it by 2 car lengths shifting, and 1 by not
could of been luck but w/e.. my trans isnt the toughest of things either.
just my .02

no Im not concerned with it making the car any faster I just want to know if it will have any negative effects on the tranny because the car is alot more fun when I manually shift it.

Manually shifting will let you go past redline. That may or may not be faster for your car.

Sooooooooooooo is it bad for the tranny or what??????? This car is in no way shape or form fast it has about 70 hp its just more interesting to drive when you manually shift it.

Of course its not good on ur tranny. Hmmm lets think about it...its not good to do that but yes i admit its fun.. I have an 87 calais and i like to shift it manually but after id do it, it would have trouble starting if i would stop and go inside a store or something and come back out and try and start it. Of course its not good on the tranny but yes its fun. If its just ur beater car go ahead, it wont kill u if it breaks down. :)

Ok I have read here and other places that some people have used toggle switches to
shift an automatic tranny .
I have yet to find anything on this other than someone mentioning it .
Where can I find the info to do this from ?
I have a 91 eclipse awd turbo Im having problems with the transmission and I think
I could use this little mod to check if my trannys clutches are bad or just a solenoid bad .
Thanks

seems like it would cost more than it's worth. If the drivelines are the same I'd say swap in a 5 speed and shave half a second off your 1/4 mile time.

If I were you though, I'd call your local mitsu dealership and the service department probobly has heard something about this sort of thing before and they can give you an idea of what's going on at least...ofcourse they'll want you to bring it in as well. But it would be a good start.

Well I would put in a manual if any junk yard in my area sold or had a awd turbo with a manual .But around here you would be lucky to get parts for a domestic car !
And buying online the shipping would kill me and I live in the city and a new ordinace was
passed that you cant work on your own cars at your house .
The minimum fine for that is $200.00 + your car would be towed if it sets for more than 2 days . I recently was fined $180.00 for a car that was not on my yard it was abandoned
in a vacant lot .Since I lived beside the lot they assesed me the fine .
Anyway does anybody have the diagram to connect the toggles to the tranny ?
It would be most helpful,Thanks

is it bad to shift from L to 2 to D on a flat road? Doesn't this act like shifting from first to second to third? Can anyone give a brief explanation on how to use these gears?

dont mean to come down you like this. but i wish people could just search the forum a little.. you'd be surprised to see how many same threads you'll see. short answer, yes, it helps, it gives you more torque at launch, however, not by much comparing to the powerbrake method in D. and it does cause a bit wear on your tranny, so i wouldn't do it everyday.

uh it wont give you more torque when launching. Power braking in D will have the same effect as power braking in L. No matter what the car will launch or start out in 1st gear. Starting in L will allow you to hold 1st gear longer or till redline then push up to 2 when you hit redline. Some cars are different though, some cars will shift at redline when you floor it in D so every car is different. If your launching leave o/d off and put it in L then shift to 2 then to D then turn o/d back on basically a 1-2-3-4 shift but you can hold the gears longer.

correct me if i am wrong, the stock tranny configuration in our car shifts early before each gear reaches its peak torque, therefore, saves gas. having shifting the gears yourself, you DO have control of peak torque at each gear, which is why i said, comes pretty close.
