St. Thomas,
Is there any way to make the BOV on my 1G Laser louder?
I know you can cut the dump tube on the 2g but as I realized today you can't do that in my situation.
Thanks in advance.

yeah man im not gonna make fun of you, thats not cool, but just trust me, dont do it. its tough, and there is alot of things involved. but to asnwer your question, there is a write up of why its not worth it somewhere, im sure defiant will post the link before he locks this. :)

The only way to make it louder is by venting to the atmosphere. Which is bad for your car since its not designed to run that way. Our MAS reads the air coming in and then adds the correct amout of fuel for it. Now it also takes into consideration that some of that air will go through the bov and back into the intake. So when you vent to the atmosphere, your not putting that air back into the intake, but the computer still ads fuel for it, thus, you run rich. I don't know if you have removed the stock air car, but do that and then try using some metal piping from the bov to the intake. The only other way you can vent is by getting a GM MAF-T setup on blowthough. Next time please use the search function as this topic has been covered for at least the last 14 years.

thanks but i did search and yes i do know that its not good to vent, hence why i gave the example of cutting the dump tube on the 2g (louder but not venting)

This is kinda ghetto, but it works:

Get rid of the dump tube

Find an old cone filter and cut out the filter mesh

Wrap the filter mesh into the same shape as the dump tube

Put claps over the mesh to clamp it down to the BOV and to your intake

It drives just fine...it puts most of the air in the intake but releases some pressure through the mesh to make it sound louder. Like I said...ghetto, but it works

id say ditch the air can, get a k&n, and a hard intake pipe and you will be able to hear it better. also you can hear the turbo spool up better too.

Umm, but then 99% of the time your driving you'll be taking in unmetered air and running lean. Especially at WOT. This is a very effective way to blow an engine.

Inadvertently I made my first gen BOV louder by removing the silencer behind the MAF sensor. You could easily hear it driving down the road. Don't vent the BOV incorrectly. Thats a big no no in the DSM community. Remember man the main purpose of a BOV is not to be all super cool street racer but to relieve pressure so as not to damage your turbo.

if you really want to you can get another bov, I have the greedy type s routed back into the intake, and its much louder then my 1g was. Thanks for searching before you posted, I just figured that you were generally asking a "can I vent" question thats been asked so many times before. Happy boosting. :thumb:

I've always thought about making some inserts that go into the 1g BOV return that make it squeal like the HKS bov. Kind of like those little whistle tips those tards put in their exhaust tips. I bet people would buy them for 5$ a pop.

I tried it for a few runs just for kicks and had no affect on my timing curves, A/F, or knock count.

If your engine runs lean enough to blow up with that little bit of unmetered air, you had major air fuel problems beforehand.

I did the BOV dump tube mod for my 2g. Not technically--I did the alternate method by taking out the entire thing and sticking a piece of PVC piping out for it. Overall, the BOV (stock 2g, I should really get to putting my UICP and 1g bov on huh?) sounds softer. Frankly I don't care though, because it's helped mid-top end enough to be noticable.

Better yet.. stick one of those Turbinator / Tornados in your BOV line.. would prol be cool till it dislodged and got sucked into the turbo
