Well I have been searching for the past few days and wanted some opinions on these 2 brands. I am looking at the Ultraflow Dynomax and Magnaflow Race Series since I hear great things about both. I'm looking for one that has the deepest sound with the best flow but I can't figure out which one I should get. I'm looking for a SS 3" inlet and dual outlet so I can try to keep the stocker look. I will be running a Megan DP with no cat. All sound clips/opinions are welcome if you have/had one of these on. Thanks

both of them sound GREAT i have a magnaflow single exit muffler. Just about every dsm is gonna sound the same with 3in. exhaust and only a muffler. It all comes down to which one you think will look better coming out of the back of your car. I have a pic in my gallery of my exhaust.

Wow, that would never fit under a 2g.

yeah i think i'm going with the dual. Now on the dual do you have to add your tips cause they ones for the Magnaflow/Ultraflow seem pretty short

90GSXDan created a thread in the video forums, asking others to post media clips of their exhaust system. I'm sure many of the links have probably expired, but I just clicked on some of them that still appear be up and running.

I admit that even though my primary concern is performance, one of the biggest factors in choosing an exhaust system is it's sound. If you're car is track only, no one really cares how loud it is. However, on a daily driver, those high end raspy tones really start to get on your nerves after a short while. Plus, if it's loud in the cockpit, then you know everyone behind you is REALLY getting an earfull, including any nearby police cruisers.

Having a few media clips for comparison really helps when shopping around. I hope that someday soon we might be able to convince some benevolent DSMer to set aside some space on their website where we can link to clips of, at least, the more popular exhaust system choices. :laser:

Well, so much for that thread. It looks like all of the Magnaflow clips have already expired. Sorry.

I have only heard 1 or 2 clips. Most of the time they don't work. Sound is as important as performance since it's my dd I don't want to purchase something I will regret everytime I turn the key know what I mean. Does anyone know which one flows more I read they flow about the same?

They do. I am going with a magnaflow 5x8x18 oval body muffler. With offset inlet and centered 3inch outlet it's the largest muffler I think I can reasonably fit.

I don't know what the underside of the 1g looks like though, might take some measurements and shop accordingly.

Since the magnaflow mufflers (the ones were looking at) are straight through design there is no sizable difference in flow. The longer the muffler body, the quieter it will be.

that I did not know. Now do I just measure around the muffler area then? thanks for all the help :thumb:

Yeah, just get a tape and take a look around in there. I am no muffler pro so I don't know the science of muffler fitment, LOL.

What I did was measured from the upper inside of my bumper to as far back as I could, turned out to be the rear end. Checked where the exhaust tunnel was and gave enough room for the muffler guy to make any bends he might have to make to get from the exhaust tunnel to the back of the muffler. Using an oval body I want it to run straight front to back, not sideways.

In order to fit an 18 inch muffler I decided to get an offset inlet. It lines up the muffler inlet almost perfectly ontop of my exhaust tunnel so there shouldn't be too much bending to hook it up. There was a ton of side to side, up and down under my car so there was flexability on how tall or wide.

I notice alot of pictures where the guys hang the hole body of the muffler under neath the bumper, maybe it's for looks of it, I don't know. I plan on tucking the muffler body underneith the bumper a little and running an exhaust tip so the exhuast doesn't burn up my bumper. Just Take notive of where your exhaust tunnel is, in other words where the piping from your engine comes from, and measure the body lerangth of the muffler (nevermind the total leangth) and you should be fine :thumb:

here are my pictures of the 14" body, 3" in, and dual 2.5" outs. I had the apex N1 and the canister rotted out the back wall so this was the "sleeper" replacement. I have no added tips, just what the muffler already had, and I just cutthe pipe about 0.5" from the apex canister and welded this guy up. The sound did not change from how the Apex sounded, nor did my butt dyno tell me any change occured in the power either.

FYI its PN 12198 from magnaflow. I paid 78.00 including shipping from hott exhaust and if you look thru either end before it was installed it was stairght thru, no baffles or anything like that. Since installing it I have not been pulled over for altered exhaust. But I did have a cop get out of his car at a light and tell me I should get my car looked at since the exhaust was so white. Thank god he did not know what 110 leaded does when you run it for extended periods. I think I ran 110 for 6 months this year (car only had 2000 miles put on it).

I have the magnaflow race muffler and am very happy with it. Its not the quietest thing in the world but my car rarely gets driven on the street so I dont worry about it. But at the same time, its not near as loud as those cheaper ebay mufflers and not as raspy either. The only sound clip I have is just a short video from the track but you can clearly hear it over the nova I was racing. I can email you the video if you want to hear it.

yes they make that one in a SS PN 14221 here it is at magnaflows website http://www.magnaflow.com/02product/shopexd.asp?zone=main&id=630 I am trying to make my car about as plain jane as possible. as you can see from teh picture I have removed the spoiler and getting that filled as well. FMIC will be black anodized as well. So the aluminized option worked REALLY good for me. Just be sure to get the one with the 14" body otherwise it will be a hard fit. (atleast it would be on a 2g FWD). Since I only have 1 inch of so before the bend of the Apex pipe. and next size body is 18" long.

I don't know how different the underside of a GSX is from a GST but do you think an 18 inch muffler would have fit with offset inlet?

I wonder if you would do the hugest favor and get some underneath pics, maybe on jacks or back the end of the car to the edge of a curb. Would be nice to see for myself how it fit underneith :coy:

ive been looking at this muffler

I had the same magna flow on my old 1G. Very nice and also cheap :thumb:
Sound was deep and not super loud. And it looks pretty close to stock.

I have plenty of webspace on my website. I haven't updated it in a long time. But have been looking to do some updates to the DSM section. I recently installed a Magnaflow muffler 3" center/ offset, 5 x8x 18 body. I also installed an 18" Dynomax resonator in the center tunnel. I cut and welded mandrel bends from Summit Racing. To attach to an RRE 2.5" to 3" downpipe with Cat deletion. I am very pleased with the performance of the system.. Spool up and power feel great. I Gteched it and got some really good numbers something along the lines of 200Hp and 170 ft-lbs of torque about 35 horsepower and 15 ft-lbs of torque. This however was on a much colder day then my last Gtech runs.. and I now have boost creep I was logging the run with my data logger and I am getting knock on the upper end now with the creep. I was running stock boost before and had an exhaust leak at the flex section causing PK. So I need to do some porting and get some more fuel. I am pleased with the sound, overall it sounds aggressive without attracting alot of attention. Can be a little loud on the highway if your into the throttle a little bit, but nothing too bad when you consider the performance gains. Any rate send me clips of your exhausts sounds/ videos/ pictures and description along with a picture of your car. I'll create a page on the different systems that you guys have and the clips. I know this would have helped me with my search! Please send them to [email protected] as my dsmtuners listed email won't be able to handle it. Title it "DSM exhaust" Any questions PM me, email me, or post on here.

by the way my site now is www.madmastersmachines.com (check out my barstool racer)

Here are some pics of my system.. I've been inspired to finally update my site. My laptop died on me this summer and with it I lost my last update which was huge. So tonight I began work on a new update. I have a sound of one exhaust system already that someone sent.. keep them coming guys! With the update of my site I'll have some more pics of my car. Engine bay and exterior as well as maybe some FAQs of things I had to work on. I'll get some sounds of my car as soon as I can.
