built a battery tray today with some metal I had laying around the garage. It is in my 98 awd spyder. I used the stock battery out of my fathers miata He put a bigger one in his car last winter and I ended up with it. It fits great and clears the a/c line since I am putting a/c back in my car also

I made something similar for my car a couple years ago. Still works and looks perfect.

It does look good and strong! Are you planning on painting/coating it?

im all like... how the freaking hell do you fit that battery like that... i got mine sideway crooked in there and barely fits but the TB coolant lines screw it all up... then i reallize... miata battery. duh.

Wow this is exactly how I want to run my battery! I too want to keep A/C but will need space for my UICP and SMIM. Too bad I can't weld . Still thanks for the idea!

I was thinking of doing the exact same thing. Made a thread about it maybe a year ago or possibly less? In welding class now so I'll be rigging this up pretty soon. Looks nice though duder!

Very nice! I've been looking for an idea of how to get my battery down there. It's a given you had to extend the grounds, but did the postive cable hook up without modifying?

the factory grounds are way to long. to get the the power from the starter I had to take it out of the loom and run it by it self. the power from the fuse box was replaced with a 1/0 cable and ran up from were it is sittting in between the front bumper and splash sheild. I already made a shorter grounds and longer starter cable. Will take a pick of it in a few

factory wiring
starter ground 37in
body ground 9in
starter power 30in
new wiring
starter ground 19.5in
body ground 5.25in
starter power 39.5in (ran low on the k-member then up to the starter)

I just lowered my battery down to almost subframe. For those interested. I took the battery tray off and the track support. Made a aluminum bracket to use the existing front hole and drop down 4 inches, the rear bolt had another hole in the frame that was used for something I removed. Bent the a/c line a little to clear the battery, also had to grind the transmission mount part of the body flat. Slid the battery down and it was pretty snug, but I made bracket just to make sure. 1 in piece of 18g steel. Used stock tray rod and tapped the strut tower for a bolt. As far as the cables the positive was fine, the negative I just relocated to another hole closer and out of the way.

Here are pictures of the bracket and after powdercoating. Enjoy.

I'd like to revive this old thread. Any chance we could get a P/N for the Miata battery and an update on how it's been holding up? Just found out my battery has started leaking so it's the perfect excuse to do this :thumb:.

It has been just fine. The oem mitia battery was really old and was on the way out when I made the tray. I know have a new battery in it. Put it in right after I got the tray made. I got it from my brother. Here is the one that is in it now
