What grit should I tell my machinist to use when honing the cylinders for new stock piston rings?

How should the head be decked for whatever type of headgasket you guys suggest? I plan on running 15 lbs of boost through a 16g, but eventually maybe 20+ after I upgrade my fuel system.

This is a fresh stock rebuild using new seals, bearings, rings, etc. Same pistons, rods, and crank however. Engine had 150k on it.

Thanks for helping!

your machinist will have a hone. and should know exactly what to do. If he dosen't I would think twice about using him.

I thought that a different grit was used for different piston rings?

Bogus will probably reply soon with the correct method of machining the head.

I would run an OEM composite gasket with ARP head studs for your setup, even to 25-28 psi.

I doubt you will get away with using the same pistons. You will want to have the cylinders checked for tapering, out of round, etc. I tried to get away with just a hone, but mine was tapered too much for my liking so I went .020 over.

You will need to use larger pistons as your bores are no longer round. You really need to start fresh with a new bore size so your cylinders are perfectly round for the new pistons and rings to wear into.
Make sure the guy machining your block has a torque plate as this stimulates the distortion when the head is bolted on.

really guys? I've been told before I would be fine if everything checked out reusing my pistons and just getting the cylinders honed out? Keep in mind this is a budget rebuild.... I'll take any advice though

IF everything checks out.

Mine appeared fine. I even had it honed and was ready to build it. I was putting my rings down the bore to check the ring end gap so I could file them. At the top of the bore it was about .032. 2" down the bore is was .018. I stopped right there and had to start from scratch. About 130k on the motor I was using.

well yes the block needs to check for wear/taper and out of round. if that is all ok , then the finish hone should be 280 grit for steel rings, 320 grit for crome-moly and 400 for chrome rings( these are seldom used now adays. most common is a moly ring

yes make sure you use a tourqe plate, and have the main caps touqed on, my thoughts are if you use a tourqe plate to distort the top of the block, the mains need to be torqued to distort the bottom too.

what head gasket are you planning on running? if a composite, a segmented stone surfacer will do the job just fine for the head and block decks.

I just got off the phone with the machine shop.... He said the cylinders checked out fine and I should be able to use my original pistons with new rings without any problems.

Just out of curiosity how much do you guys think all that I've had done will cost? It's getting to that time and he said he hasn't sat down and totaled it up yet, but I'm curious.

-Line honed mains with torque plate
-Pistons cleaned and checked
-Cylinders checked and honed at 320 grit
-Crank checked and polished
-Rods cleaned and checked
-Block hot tanked/cleaned
-Head disassembled, cleaned, 3 angle valve job, and reassembled. And decked with the segmented stone surfacer :)
-ARP main studs installed

Line honed mains with torque plate.................No torque plate on mains, just the caps, $125
-Pistons cleaned and checked.............................. about $10 each
-Cylinders checked and honed at 320 grit..... this is where the torque plate is used, about $60-$100
-Crank checked and polished....................about $45
-Rods cleaned and checked......... should been in with the pistons
-Block hot tanked/cleaned................ about $40
-Head disassembled, cleaned, 3 angle valve job, and reassembled........ about $160
-ARP main studs installed..... that should be done when having the mains were honed

make sure they test your springs, or get a set of BC springs they work with the stock retainers....

and tell him to back cut the valves too.......

and do this too.....

what equipment will he surface the head with?

hope this gets you going in the right way
