Hey guys, I've got a few questions about getting my block machined. I've got a block with matching girdle, but a crank and pistons/rods from another block. What all do I need to have done to make sure everything is in spec and meshes fine with each other? Or can I get by with just having it honed and hot tanked?

Also, whats a good affordable head gasket for a seven bolt? I'm not looking to make crazy power on this engine, as I will be building a six bolt over the next year or so. Thanks, Cj.

The head gasket is simple, an OE or felpro composite, have been to 25 pasi +

Have the block cleaned/ honed and have the mains checked, deck the block if needed.

Rods and pistons have them cleanes and measured for size, have the big end of the rod checked for round.

The crank, have checked and polished, ground undersized if needed

Awesome, thank you! If I do end up having the crank ground, will they tell me what size bearings I will need? Or will I have to figure that out? Also, any clue how much the above would typically run? Thanks again, Cj.

It varies from machine shop to machine shop. The one I use charges 8$ a cylinder for bore/hone, 2$ a valve for valve seal replacement, 4$ a valve for valve grind, 10$ a surface for head surfacing. Etc. He is very reasonable, I can get a "works" package for a 4 cylinder for around 250$ which include cleaning, and any required machine work. He prices assembly at 30$ Per hour.

The last machine shop I used charged a bit more, and I got tired of them putting my work off. The guy I use now is usually happy to see a customer because it means he is gonna make some money that day.

Awesome, thanks!

The machine shop should tell you how much they ground off the crank and can order your correct bearings or just tell you which ones to get.

A shop that works that cheap I would be worried about the quality. Also I would worry about what shape the equipment being used.

$10 to surface a head? Whan I started in machine work in 1992 to belt surface a head was $30, most shops here get $40-$60

$4 per valve? so a 16 valve job is $64? What is using an old stone valve seat grinder? Then another $2 to change each seal so another $32 ? Add the whole thing up $96 plus $10 for a surface = $106

At those prices the equipment must be paid off, for years (decades even)

A good surfacer, new, will run $16k to $60k, with an equipment payment of $500 to $1500 a month, so that would mean surfacing 50-150 a month just to pay the surfacer bill

Now a new belt surfacer is in the $8k-$12k, IMHO they are junk for producing a good surface finish.

Bore/hone.......................................$12-15 per cyl
Deck block......................................$60-100 (4 cyl block)

Rod
Check big end.................................$7-10 per rod
Resize big end.................................$ 9-12 per rod
R&R Pistons.....................................$8-10 per

Crank
Polish only......................................$25-50
Grind/polish....................................$45-70
Strighten crank................................$40-60

Head
16v-Valve job...................................$120-200
Surface.............................................$40-60
Pressure test.....................................$35-50
R&R guide (knock out)........................$3-5 per guide + part
R&R seat...........................................$6-10 per seat +part
