ok I've done a lot of research on this but can find a definite answer. I want to buy a lsd insert for my 1998 Gst automatic. There's been a lot of conflict if phantom grip works for an automatic transmission or not. What brand lsd inserts are available for a gst automatic?
 
It should if the auto axles are the same as the 5-speed axles. The differential housing is identical, just a different ring gear.

I completely agree with John on this and would follow his recommendations. The Quaife and Wavetrac LSD differentials are great quality and will work properly with ATF type fluids.
 
Once upon a time, there was a guy named "Tom." Tom bought tools made by (effectively) slave labor in Guongzhou Province, made his wide wheels by welding pairs of steelies together, and added bolts to his tires for winter-time use. Tom saved a lot of money this way, for which Tom gained many supporters; in the world of import cars, Tom's supporters were known as his "phans."

One day, Tom noticed that the spider gears in his diff only rotated when the diff was acting as a diff. Even more, Tom noticed that the spider gears turned when he was trying to drive straight ahead very fast but one driven wheel lost what he called "grip." So, Tom decided to stop allowing his diff to be a diff by jamming a piece of metal inside that would grind up against the spider gears. Yes, this would wear away the spiders, leaving little bits of metal all over the place, but it did what he wanted: it stopped the diff from being (as much of) a diff.

To celebrate this achievement, the phans of Tom call this grip-adding device the "phans-of-Tom-grip-adding-device." Because that was too wordy, however, most people these days just say "phan-Tom-grip." That Tom ended up spending more money on fixing the subsequent damage to his drivetrain than he would have spent just buying a 1.5-way or helical is a side issue. That Tom was killed when his Harbor Freight jack collapsed is also irrelevant.
 
I would agree with John on this too; I have a "phans-of-Tom-grip-adding-device" in one of my W5M33's, and it definitely generates a lot of metal powder. I'm not too fond of having that stuff flowing around my manual, and couldn't imagine doing that to an auto.
Besides, they really don't work much at all.
 
This thread is getting amusing. Every day I'm taking calls and fixing stuff for people who didn't want to get the right stuff to begin with.

I'm not at all suggesting that the op was trying to do this but due to the turn that was taken here I felt like i should mention that.

My advise, not just for cars but for almost everything is "buy once, cry once"

It sucks to be the person that needs to call me to fix their trans because someone else rebuilt it and f'd it up. It really sucks to spend money two or three times for the same item.

Thank you guys for the information. im just gonna save up for a true lsd differential. id rather spend money once than having to drop tons of money to fix something that could of been prevented by buying the correct item in the first place.
