Could this be why I dont have a second gear right now? ROFL

I pulled off hard in first and slammed it into second and it went right into neutral. I was like WTF?? Im thinking, "did i really just break the second gear in a shep tranny thats next to new?".
So I pulled off and went from 1st to 3rd, then downshifted into 2nd and 2nd gear worked fine. It only doesnt work when going from 1st to 2nd.
So I drove it home and popped the hood, I found this.

Yes, that is definitely a big problem. I'm assuming you can still hit 1st and 3rd b/c that cable is "pulling" the shift lever into those gears.

Grab a new set of shifter cables from Mitu or an aftermarket place. They usually cost around $100:

God i have seen this way to many times f-ing mitsu.

How about "damn cable shifted transmissions" I wish everything use the steel linkages like some hondas do, Even with bad synchros those linkage trannies outshift a cable op tranny everytime. Although i do love the shifting on my T.R.E. stage II, it's still got that cable feel to it. :(

For the OP: Yep, the cable is pulling in 1st and 3rd and needs to push for 2nd and 4th so that's most likely your only issue.

Thanks for the posts and help guys.
The only thing that confused me is why 2nd gear works when I downshift from 3rd. Ill be ordering a new set asap.

The cable probably just aligns better going from 3rd to 2nd, allowing the end of the cable to go back into its sheath. Either way, the cable is definitely the problem. Glad it's a fairly cheap/easy fix (rather than a big clutch/trans problem)! :thumb:

Yeah thats exactly how I felt about it!

I really just want to snap right now!

I just spent almost 4 hours trying to install the shifter cables and cant figure it out for the life of me!

I tried every single possible way and I just cant seem to get them to fit right. I dont understand what Im doing wrong here. This should be SIMPLE!!!

Can someone tell me by looking at their car, do the cables criss cross after they come out of the firewall? Or do they come straight out parrallel to each other right to the tranny?
I thought they came straight out, but then if I hook them up parrallel in the cabin, I cant get them to fit. Then if I cross them on the outside and inside they dont fit either! And trying to cross the inside and run the outside parrallel doesnt work either.
Can someone please help me out here, im going nuts trying to figure this out

Can someone check to see if this is the right part number MD770982 for a 98 GST.

On a 1g the cables do not cross after they come out of the firewall, I'm not sure about under the dash

Sorry to hear bout the issues with your trans, my buddies 1g just did this as we were fooling around. It did and does the EXACT same thing and sure enough the cable is broken the EXACT same way. Were hoping nothing internal was done to it and we will be finding out how hard the cable install is probably within the next few days. Thank you for posting this issue because this was the first one I clicked one that had pictures and it helped a huge amount. BTW hows the shep trans? I'm curious to get one if I ever can get the money
