My uncle has this 1997 Mitsubishi Eclipse GST that he said I could have if I fixed it up and I'm kind of lost since it will be my first time working on a car to this extent. It has the 4G63 engine with its internal forged to handle 11 to 1 compression. I need help identifying what I'm missing to get it running.

420A and that is a chassis for a full restoration that MANY will struggle with as costs will be a heck of a lot! first step back and think, do you want to spend 15k + on this as that is what it is going to cost to bring that back to life inc paint and 15k is on the lower side if doing it professionally! of course, home DIY is possible but then time becomes the factor

To me most of these cars are worth fixing as long as they haven't been in an accident. There's quite a bit you'll have to do but if your actually interested in it don't get discouraged. If it has no rust or damage I'd clean it up and dig in. It looks like most of what you need is there. I don't see the turbo obviously and you'll need the intercooler. As hard as it is to see it does look like the transmission is there just by looking at the top mount.

It literally can't get any worse with the state it is in, only up from here. Just my thoughts to throw in since I don't hate the 420a.

My only comment was value vs cost to repair. I would make more financial sense to get another car, 420a or not.

I agree but if he gets it for free it's hard to go wrong. I feel like I just went through this mess and I don't look at the value anymore. Everyone's different I suppose but I do see your side of things.

Given the appearance, it looks like the car has sat outside and exposed for a long time. If this was my prospective car the first thing I'd do is pull the oil drain plug and see what comes out. Any water at all and you're definitely looking at an engine rebuild or replacement. Even if that checks out okay I'd still probably pull the head considering the internals have been subject to the outside (open ports on the head, open water lines).

Let's say the engine is primo... all of the plastic and rubber in the engine bay is suspect, so I'd replace all vacuum and water lines. I'd also expect electrical gremlins because of the wiring connectors' exposure to the elements. And since the windshield has a hole in it and the pass window is down (or missing), the interior is suspect. Replacing carpet is easy... but if the floor pan is rusted, that's another matter. And if the wiring and components (ECU) have been subject to standing water...

All of this to say, I have no idea what exactly it will take to get this car running. You might get lucky and find it's largely a matter of basic maintenance and some fresh gas. More likely, though, is you're staring at a complete rebuild, including replacing components that are hard to find.
