Ok guys,

In stock condition we have 3 belts .
  1. alternator belt - this belt is driven by the crankshaft pulley and provides the needed drive to operate the water pump and the alternator. the alternator acts as the belt tensioning fulcrum.
  2. power steering belt - this is the shortest belt and is driven by the water pump pulley. power steering pump acts as the belt tensioning fulcrum.
  3. air conditioning belt - driven by the crankshaft pulley it has a tensioner mounted near the A/C compressor for belt adjustment

just in case - fulcrum - A pivot point of a lever, or the point around which an object turns.

Now if i wanted to eliminate the a/c compressor and relocate the alternator would not the below statements be true?

  1. Power steering belt - leave it as is.
  2. Alternator belt - get a shorter belt to go from crankshaft pulley to water pump. move and or modify A/C tensioner and bracket to provide the needed tensioning adjustments.
  3. A/C belt - get shorter belt that runs from crankshaft pulley to re-located alternator.

the pros would be better alternator life and performance.
better belt wear.cleaner engine bay appearance.

cons no a/c . hard to get to in the rare event of an alternator failure.

***NOTE: this question is being asked not due to laziness or a failure to do research but, in an attempt to understand a previous post that stated a need to run a longer belt after the relocation and then having belt failure at higher rpms***.

No incorrect most kits still utilize the alternator pulley to run the alt and the water pump still so you will need a long belt and the stock power steering belt. You will no longer use the a/c portion of the harmonic balancer.

You end up with a single belt from crank pulley to alternator. Then a second long belt that goes from crank pulley to water pump to power steering.

once your relocation is done, run a string where you want the belts to go. Then once you have the sizes bring them to any auto parts store and measure them up. I used to work in a car quest store and they even have a tool that you can run the string on and it will give you the correct size and part number for the belt.
