Resolved Long block, short block?

Those terms don't describe a type of motor. It's a generic term for all motors. Short block means just the rotating assembly and block itself. Long block includes the cylinder head. So you would never say "I have a short block in my car". You might say "I have a short block for sale" meaning just the block and crank etc. Many times a motor rebuild may only include the shortblock and the cylinder head would simply be reused. This was likely more common with cast iron cylinder heads

If your are... then well...

If its in your car and runs and drives its a longblock.

If its missing half the engine like the head then its a shortblock.

If you're planning on rebuilding then this question don't matter I guess but ill ask anyway. If it was running before disassembly why was it taken apart? Just curious is all.

Short block and long block are pretty common terms, i think long block is pretty much ready to run. Might need alt/water pump/carb on alot of applications.
