Can't find info on making a cable for a Laptop 1G logger.

I remember reading this some place maybe over a year ago. Now time has come and I can't find it.

I need to hook up my Laptop which has a USB port. I know I need a Keyspan cable for null modem device, but what are the other steeps after that? I know i must have USB to serial.

Help.

Does anyone know anything about this? I would like to build on today if i can get the parts. What all would i need?

I just built one...I havn't been able to get the logging part to work on the emulator yet. I was able to check my code which was more important to me at the time. I just ordered another cable for my palm so...
Anyways, All you need is the null modem adapter, which I built btw, You also need a palm datalogging cable. So what I did was I built a cable from my palm cable to my car. Then I built a cable from my car cable to my laptop. Basically its a null modem adapter and a gender changer...

I want to just run it with my laptop, and i want it to tune my safc. So i need it to log. Will it do that?

I can build it all for you if you like. I can have it done and in the mail by today.
I know people have logged with their lappys but I havn't figured out yet. Its low on my list since my cables in the mail and i figured out my check engine light issue. I promise the solder job will be top notch if you're interested. If you'd rather try it yourself I can guide you through it. You DO need a cable coming from your cars obd1 port to a DB9 connector. It would take a while for me to get the plug that goes in there unless your fine with just female connectors...?

Well i was going to go to radio shack and get the parts and put it together today. Just need to know what to get.

Umm...lets see...

1 female DB9 connector(to laptop or male depending on which one you have)
3 different color reels of wire, I had really small stuff and it worked, i'd go a bit larger but no biggie.
1 6'ish long casing for the wire
3 female connectors (to plug into OBD port)
1 DB9 plastic backshell (DB9 Cover)
1 1N914 diode *5
1 10k ohm 1 watt 5% carb on film resistor

Since this is the worst parts list on the planet i'll label it...gimme a min with the picture

Then use the diagram on the page I listed above to solder in the diode and resistor.
Let me know if you have any trouble.

So i can find a 10k ohm 1 watt 5% carb on film resistor. I saw some where about one that was a 1/2 watt so whats wrong here. Would that one work or do i need to find the 1 watt?

What does the sizes do. What different just want to learn a little. I have never try to log i was planning on getting dsmlink, but i dont have that kind of money.
